I mean I don't know the thought process of Ukrainians but Russia does have a reputation for celebrating victory in non-consensual ways. I'm sure people with families can come up with a dozen reasons to fight to the death.

If the country falls and the refugee valves get opened in earnest, IMO there might not even be much of a civilian population who'll willingly remain beyond those who fell behind Russian lines, those with immediate obligations & the die-hard nationalists (and even nationalism can still be carried out abroad).

Ultimately I think it comes down to how publicly perceptible the 'collapse' is seen as, as it gives people enough time to start fleeing.
