Now that I have been following the thread for a bit and been seeing the updates being shared. I am getting the same fog of war vibes that I ended up getting during the entire Israel and Palestine spat last spring. Essentially a bunch of conjecture and unreliable information that if anything is composed of nothing but half truths. There is no way that the Russians have had that heavy of casualties, especially considering that from what I understand they have been methodically picking of Ukranian air defences over the last 48 hours. Along with their targeting of any semblance of Ukraine having any form of air ordinance. Not to say the Russians haven't experienced losses, but from what I have seen in the streams, most of the casualties are related to the air strikes, and systematic ambushes of certain troop carriers.
The ghost of Kiev larp is quite a hilarious one I am going to say, because this type of story sounds like it was cooked up from old cracker Jack box clippings of the bad ass fighting ace.
Like I said a month ago, the invasion was swift and fast, and took a lot of people off of guard despite the building of troops around the Ukraine border over the last month now. The Russians are playing the slow game and at least they are looking to avoid civilian casualties. Not to say unfortunate people didn't get murdered in the cross fire related to the shellings, but if this was the zerg rush people are claiming it to be. Then we should have a hell of a lot more dead Ukrainians and less of this floaty data.
Not to say that there is going to be an easy end to this conflict and if anything it is going to be quite a battle for the time being. The Twitter and Reddit larpers need to stop the propagation of guerrilla asymmetric warfare that most of those posters have only observed in Hesbola propaganda reels. Quite obvious that none of these people have ever engaged in military combat, let alone even read a field manual. Which putting together makeshift bobbie traps is far more ineffective in respect to civilian collateral damage, than actually being able to kill the enemy. Any civilian should stay shelter and place and stay the fuck out of the heat. Considering that engaging in this type of combat requires a fair amount of training.
Then you also have the warhawks wanting to circle the wagons like this is our fucking problem. I don't give a shit if we send them aid, because at the end of the day people need to have supplies to live during a complete shut down of their society. I emphasize with the plight of the average Ukrainian, but it is far too late for the west to do anything more than virtue signal, and send supplies. Putin took his opportunity and seized the day, and at the end of the day that is their border. Not to say I advocate for the Russians actions, indeed is sinister and imperialist as America's ambitions in the sandbox. Though the sociological issues in that region have lead up to this over the last 8 years now. It was an inevitable action, and if anything the United States has no business in that part of the world. Beyond supplying support and helping in clean up efforts after all is said and done.
The Russians are economically in problems, but I feel that the sanctions are too little too late to deter this action. If anything this will reinforce the efforts, because they have no choice but to proceed with their efforts in Ukraine. I pray for minimal losses to the innocent people stuck in the crossfire.
It's clear that there is plenty of fog of war. Neither side is showing any video from the front for obvious reasons. Currently, the main combat is being waged in the East where there are no civilians to post any info online. We'll get a clearer image about what exactly happened there once this blows over.
When it comes to asymmetrical warfare, while I have massive respect for anyone capable of doing it, the fact is that in the age of drone bombs and accurate infrared cameras, it will be extremely difficult to hide and strike outside of urban areas. However, this is where the main ace of the Ukrainians lies. The Russians are absolutely terrified of capturing Kiev if there is any genuine resistance. They know that it will not only be a bloodbath on both sides, but they will have to indiscriminately destroy buildings on their way. This is a massive PR strike.
As long as the Ukrainian militia can keep together and form at least some kind of organized defence, Kiev will hold. As long as Kiev holds, Ukraine will hold.
If Kiev can somehow be supplied with weapons, ammo and food, they could last for months. The issue is that there are a massive amount of civilians there that the Ukrainians are essentially using as human shields. Russians can't bomb buildings and they can't cut off any vital utilities or food due to them. If they do and begin a siege, they will have a massive PR-hit. This is why the Russians have been so careful. It is also their greatest weakness.
While the situation of the Ukrainians might seem bad, I would not want to be the Russian commander either. You really only have two bad choices,
1. go in and suffer massive tactical losses and a chance for defeat, or
2. launch a siege that will last for weeks and cause massive international PR-Damage
The only reason why Americans were able to take cities in the Middle East so easily is due to the fact that the locals did not put up a real fight. Barry McCaffry predicted up to 3000 American casualties during the fall of Baghdad in 2003 if they actually have to fight for it.
Arming everyone and their uncle means that even if half of your guys desert, the other half could very well offer enough resistance to stall the attacker. It is still possible to make Russia reconsider their terms if they find the cost of taking Kiev too great.
