President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

Zelensky hastily fled Kiev, Russian State Duma Speaker claims

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky hastily fled Kiev on Friday and is currently in Lvov with his entourage, Russian State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin stated in his Telegram channel Saturday.

"Zelensky hastily fled Kiev. He was not in the Ukrainian capital yesterday already. He fled to Lvov with his entourage, where he and his assistance were provided with accommodation," the speaker said, adding that all videos published in the social media were recorded in advance.

"The information comes from Verkhovna Rada lawmakers who tried to meet with [Zelensky] in Kiev. They were invited to Lvov for a meeting. Zelensky is currently under protection of neo-Nazis," he added.

UN refugee chief says 150,000 Ukrainians have fled the country

More than 150,000 Ukrainians have fled the country since the start of Russia’s invasion, the UN’s high commissioner for refugees has said.

“Displacement in Ukraine is also growing but the military situation makes it difficult to estimate numbers and provide aid,” Filippo Grandi tweeted.

US official claims Russian forces frustrated by ‘viable’ Ukrainian resistance

Russian forces are becoming increasingly frustrated by what the United States believes is “viable” Ukrainian resistance, a US defence official has said.

“We know that they have not made the progress that they have wanted to make, particularly in the north. They have been frustrated by what they have seen is a very determined resistance,” the official claimed, without providing evidence. “It has slowed them down.”

Ukraine open to talks but not Russian ultimatums, Zellensky’s advisor says

Kyiv has denied suggestions from the Kremlin that it is refusing to negotiate a ceasefire with Russia, but says it is not ready to accept ultimatums or unacceptable conditions.

Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Zelenkskyy, told the Reuters news agency that Ukraine has prepared a negotiating position but was being confronted with impractical negotiating conditions from Moscow.

“It was yesterday that the aggressive actions of the armed forces of the Russian Federation escalated, up to evening and night mass air and missile strikes on Ukrainian cities,” he said. “We consider such actions only an attempt to break Ukraine and force it to accept categorically unacceptable conditions.”

EU should speed Ukraine’s path to membership, Poland’s president says

The European Union should speed Ukraine’s path to membership, Polish President Andrzej Duda has said, adding that Kyiv should also have access to funds from the bloc for reconstruction.

“Poland supports an express path for Ukraine membership in the European Union,” Duda wrote on Twitter. “Candidate status should be granted immediately and membership talks initiated immediately thereafter.”

“Ukraine should also have access to EU funds for reconstruction. This is what Ukraine deserves.”

Pointing to Israeli occupation of the Golan Heights, an occupation that most experts agree violates international law, and calling them hypocrites is a pretty valid counterpoint to their statements about the invasion. Israel isn't the only country that does what it wants and then wags its finger at other countries, but it definitely is a country that does that.
Israel still holds the Golan Heights because before they occupied it, the Syrians were firing missiles down into Israel and they know if they give it up they will once again face the Syrians which is why they still hold onto that useless spit of land.

You misinterpreted me but I still love you.

Anyway, I don't believe I've seen Hezbollah do anything lately but I can be 100% wrong on that. Hamas used to be successful but it's at the point where I pity the people of Gaza who are only trying to live their lives at this point. Any funds gathered by Hamas goes towards rockets that kill their own people instead of actually trying to be civilized and the Jews eventually bomb the shit out of them anyway.

Northern Ireland, Op Banner/The Troubles. The Republicans achieved limited success in getting the Good Friday Agreement which has now led them to power sharing and could - eventually - see a united Ireland.

Fuck, just mountains? Hey, VIETNAM?

Many non-mountainous areas of IRAQ and AFGHANISTAN.

Dude, the idea that you can only do it in mountains is silly. Stop.
Not that I agree with the guy you're arguing with but Vietnam is pretty mountainous in parts, to be fair

Aren’t they doing this already?
They had stopped (at least officially) their attack while the peace treaty was being negotiated. When that failed, Putin ordered even harsher attack.
Does anyone have any sites where we can donate to help Ukrainian refugees?

Send money to the UN. In the brief moment they aren't raping Children, they might actually consider giving the money to Ukrainians. Then again, it's UN, they'll probably just use it to rape more children.

Germany working on limiting Russia access to SWIFT

Germany said Saturday it was working on excluding Russia from the SWIFT interbank system in a “targeted and functional” way that would limit any collateral damage.

“We are working at the same time urgently on limiting the collateral damage from an exclusion from SWIFT so that (the measure) hits the right people,” Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and Economy Minister Robert Habeck said in a joint statement.

“What we need is a targeted and functional limitation of SWIFT,” they added.

They're not. I've seen the insides. Most of the F18s we use were built in the 70's and 80's and they haven't been updated.
Dafuq? The US Navy retired the legacy Hornet in the late 2010s. They only have Super Hornets now, most built in the early 2000s, with a fair number of F-35s on the way (of course the F-35 is having growing pains).
[Disregard if this guy is a Finn, Canadian, Kuwaiti, Swiss, Malaysian, or a US Marine.]

It's true, but that's just the airframe the avionics are up to date - as are the armaments.
Heck, our B-52's are all older than the crews that fly them. They are periodically updated - engines, frames, avionics. Still get the job done.

It's important to remember that no country today produces advanced fighters, bombers, transports like they were cranked out during World War II. WWII aircraft were vastly simpler. Today's planes, as a rule, are designed to be upgraded and updated over a fairly long service life. Takes a LONG time - too long, in my opinion and from my experience - to develop and deploy a new major weapons system.

Was looking some news re the Russian invasion. Said some Russian units had run out of fuel. They had used more than their allocation. Really? Poor planning, poor logistics.

Just did a little looking around. The world is jumping on Putin. Surely he has realized he's totally fucked this up. Dude, declare victory and go home. You are uniting the world against you.

They never had the infrastructure to upkeep the arsenal.
I suppose they could have developed the infrastructure and reduced the arsenal. They were kept in facilities which maintained them. It was foolish. They likely realise that now, yet I suppose a present when the Russian Pres was ranting on TV that Ukraine is not a real country, couldn't have been imagine. Aid and political pressure are blandishments that can be resisted. Nukes are the 'fuck around and find out' which keeps rivals honest.

This is it, for the most part old airframes are fine - well kinda, look at E-3Ds falling to bits for a counter example - if subsystems are modern and integrated.

Not the case with fighters as the actual airframe is important too, I.E stealth, engine power etc. In that regard, fighters being such a multi-role tool having up to date airframes is a big deal.
