Nigga, I was alive in the 80's (briefly) and 90's: they used the term "Former President" all the time to describe guys like Nixon and Carter. I remember learning about Richard Nixon's death from my teacher in elementary school in the 90's, and the news video clip she showed us constantly referred to him as Former President Nixon. Let's face it if russia decided to go gloves off total war they would roll Ukraine very quickly. They're being surprisingly careful about all of this.

My assumption is that Russia took one look at the success NATO had in Libya or the success the US had in Afghanistan (initially) and Iraq and thought they could do the same here. Never mind that this isn't how Russia fights wars, just look at Chechnya or Afghanistan. The US has a lot more experience and success at carrying out this sort of precise operation.

A while back I wondered if it was to some degree probing except for the effort to envelop and finally capture Kiev. Putin is probably holding back his best troops, for if the second raters and irregular thugs like the Kadyrovtsy do it, all the better. Their mistakes could be a help as it means a potential foe underestimating Russia. My impression is that Kadyrovsky are like Bashi-bazouks, thuggish Ottomans irregulars sent in first, who were often, like the Kadyrovsky spurred by bounties and the prospect of loot. Now that might be wrong, but it is an impression I get. And the Ukies' airforce is holding up well, or better. Making overwhelming power tell perhaps can be hard. Perhaps they hope the airforce would fold as on paper they are so outmatched, and did not carefully plan their destruction. Again, in these early days perhaps Putin is hoping the second raters get the job done.

The Ukrainian Air Force? What AB are the operating from? How are they being fueled? Who's servicing these aircraft? Where is their ordnance? I can understand if this is being done in Poland or one of the Baltic states but I doubt it, as that makes them a legitimate target.
