Even when both parents are pretty much fuckups, the general purpose of family court intervention is to reunite the family to the greatest extent possible.

If people could just sign away their kids willy nilly, there'd be a lot of blackmail/coercion/threats happening behind the scenes to get parents who want their kids in their lives to sign them away. Very difficult. Generally speaking, the state never wants to take ownership of a kid. So if something happens to the one parent, the kid becomes a ward of the state.

The other issue is that a lot of assholes think they want to do this and then years later, especially once the child gets close to aging out of child support age, the asshole wants back in the kid's life.

The state hates retrying cases, especially family law cases.

In Patrick's situation, I think since his daughter actually had someone available to be an actual father and take on the responsibility and adopt her, on point 1, it was slightly easier than say a situation where there is just the other single parent.

But point 2, the state is still wary. Pat's ex and her husband most likely had to spend a fortune and went through hell to secure the future of this little girl.
