The most interesting thing I learned is that there are large deposits of natural gas in the Black Sea around Crimea. They're large enough that if Ukraine was able to exploit them they'd be in direct competition with Russia and I think that explains the Crimea situation and why Russia has their best troops on that front: Putin wants to separate Ukraine entirely from the Black Sea.

My armchair general take on it: Russia wants everything east of the Dnieper and south from Transnistria to the Dnieper.

People have been getting killed in Ukraine for 8 years and have been killed in retarded proxy wars for the past 30 years. That's what happens in war. Western demographies aren't great but you're overdosing on copium if you think they're even on the same level as Russia's demography. Germany could, if so inclined, regenerate their demography over two or three generations with the right government policies. Russia does not have that option - their demography is terminal. Unless you push for some kind of single-mother driven family policy in Russia, there are simply not enough men to regenerate the Russian population to stave off severe deflation.
