Taiwan may not be mainland China, but it's still economically significant. The main reason the US, France, and Britain were so keen to give Taipei's seat to Beijing is because they were working very hard at the time to drive a wedge between the Soviet Union and China to keep them from being a united communist bloc, which they largely succeeded at doing.

I think we can say it's one of two things. It's either to completely annex Ukraine or to capture Eastern parts of it and make them de facto part of Russia. And I talked about both of those possibilities. The third option - that he actually wants war with NATO powers is, I hope, too absurd to contemplate.

the problem is that all of those outcomes are too absurd to contemplate - there’s no win condition. It’s pure retardation.
