I dunno why they are surprised by Vanguard being a failure. COD WW2 was just a few years ago and it was a flop too. I just don't think most gamers want to go back to WW2 after playing current year games especially when we had like almost two decades straight of WW2 shooters.
I think where they're really stung by Vanguard is with Warzone, it feels like it takes a lot longer to find a match since it switched over to WW2, and Warzone probably makes the most money for them.
at least WW2 they had way more justification, it was roughly a decade since the last time they used the setting and an entire console generation. Plus it would have been the first time WW2 was tackled on that gen's consoles. it was literally an era a huge chunk of gamers never got to play.
Vanguard is awful all over, the destructible environments never really matter as much as devs wanted them to. it takes so long to unlock gun attachments that most don't bother.
the end of match bullshit takes up way too much time for little payoff (50xp wow, the whole match gives everyon 2k+)
And i'll 100% agree with Warzone. it also has way too many modes too for how little the playbase seems, i swear multiple times i'd leave a match and basically have to wait for the match i played to end because there was no other match (on the planet) going on for that mode. I'll admit plunder's original changes were cool at first, but no one reaching the goal after 30 minutes is sort of obnoxious. and most of it is because of the lack of cash, so it would be extremely easy to reach an unwinnable scenario roughly 1/3rd of the way into the match. especially because players could bank their cash, so by the end no one would have any on any of them.
they did say they fixed it this season but i highly doubt it. just the Vanguard changes in general are fucking awful, the map is much larger because of the terrain differences, Ukraine was way more flat whereas the island has bizarre terrain, on the flip side i could count on one hand the amount of times i've been sniped. where as that was the smartest mode in Ukraine.
the map being huge wouldn't be too bad except its much bigger than the 150+ players need, it reminds me of how in fortnite you can get into the last 25 people without running into anyone, and not intentionally either. the first 3 circles are basically a waste of time at this point. unless you're intentionally being a douche they won't matter. The only good part is that you can't really out run it like you were able to in Ukraine.
the vehicles are fucking awful to drive now too, it used to be a fun easy way to traverse the map, now they all have roughly the max speed as someone with a sprint powerup.
honestly i've sort of fallen out of love with the franchise altogether. what few maps Vanguard has are blatant copies of older better maps, or just shit. i honestly don't think i'll put much time into playing this year either.
Vanguard was a terrible idea all over, i know they had no real place to go, but i honestly think something focusing on say the African Great War would have been cool. we have the Cold War and Modern War but no one focus'es on the wars outside of that.
Plus it would have had a great marketing campaign, "no US, No Russia, all War" a true conflict that wouldn't have anything to do with white people could have been spun into a cool thing PR wise. And they wouldn't have needed the goofy diversity because its fucking africa. it would have also been better for Warzone overall, because i highly doubt they'll be able to fit the current island into the plot of the next MW game.
They said it themselves investors felt the franchise is cannibalizing itself with Warzone existing and it’s true.
everyone is on the same page here. even Battefield got fucked with its attempt. Why would you purchase a yearly game when you can play Warzone for free, it even had the MP bullshit at least one week a month. seriously why play 8v8 MW when you could play 50v50 instead? or payload or multiple other modes.
the problem is that if they have Warzone why do they need 4 studios making shooters, and thats the real rub. they don't. so that means layoffs. Thats really what Vanguard was about, preventing those.
