President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

I'll admit, I'm kinda scared this will blow up into something worse with Putin being cornered to a point where his options are limited to a self inflicted head ventilation or starting WW3 in a bid to stay in power a little longer.
That's the worst-case scenario in this regard; that he'll launch WW3 in a desperate bid to stay in power after his army was practically forced into a standstill by Ukraine.

What the fuck even is this and why is this happening, why are russians so pathethically inept? It looks like their entire status as a military world power was a giant bluff that got called when they didn't get their way just because they put shitloads of troops at Ukrainian borders forcing them to play with their shit hand.

If the russian POW videos are real and they're telling the truth Russia learned fucking NOTHING from trying to invade Finland and still uses the tactic of taking the nearest greenhorn soldat, giving him a gun, pointing him in the general direction of wherever and saying "Go".
Training a real army takes time and money. Money that Russia can barely afford, since their economy runs on inflation and oil. They can't even surpass individual American states like Texas, New York, and California in terms of GDP revenue. Better to grab some random school boys, give them guns, and order them to hold or assault certain places, hoping that they won't run into some real resistance.

And of course, Putin threw away time, since he chose now of all times to invade, while his army is still poorly-trained. It's not PLA levels of bad, but it's awfully close. Many of these boys need more time to train before becoming real soldiers, and the fact that Putin threw their lives away with such abandon is sickening. These boys signed up to defend Mother Russia, to risk their lives to be a living shield for their country, and this is what they get; they're thrown into a war they didn't sign up for, and if they protest, it's off to the firing squad for them.

Now we truly see what the oligarchs and the old Communist Party elite of the USSR think of the new Russian generation; they're nothing but fucking cannon fodder, to be drafted and sent to their deaths at a moment's notice. Along with the senseless deaths of Ukrainian civilians and soldiers, this is a part of the big tragedy of this war.

Way this war makes Russia look is that if they didn't have nukes they would be completely steamrolled by NATO.
That's the only reason Moscow as of yet hasn't been reduced into cinders by American bombers. Which means that if more improvements are made to America's anti-ICBM defenses, Russia would be carved up like a turkey for Thanksgiving.

How the hell does something like this happen and why the fuck is it that noone seems interested in peace talks, no one even suggests to Russia that if they do X then sanctions can be immediately removed, they just add more and more as if they wanted Russia to do something drastic.
The West has been looking for an excuse to punish Russia for some time, mainly for helping Iran and the Ukrainian Separatists. Russian artillery killing Ukrainian civilians is the perfect excuse for these bevvy of sanctions. Just like any animal; the West can smell Russia's blood, and it struck. Given that Russia's economy is smaller than Texas, these sanctions are akin to a Johnny Cage nut-punch to the Russian economy. If the oligarchs who run Russia's businesses didn't hate Putin before, they will, now. And the West is hoping that these sanctions would inspire Russia's elite to "relieve" Putin from his command status. Then maybe they'll make a deal and remove the sanctions once Putin and his military adventurism is gone.

And even if Russians and Belarussians take Ukraine what then? They'll own a broken, ruined country where every single civilian conspires against their troops while being forced to sit behind Iron Curtain 2.0.
Putin isn't thinking about pragmatic advantages, he's a nostalgic old man who wants to restore the old Soviet Empire, damn everything else. A pragmatic man would have used troops on the border to wring concessions from the West, NATO, and Ukraine, before pulling out. It's not like Sleepy Joe would have fought that hard to deny Russia some minor political or economic concessions back when people thought they were a legitimate military power to be feared. But now, the myth of Russian military power has been dispelled; the Emperor has no clothes, and everyone is laughing at his dick and balls flapping in the wind. Putin is that Emperor, and the people laughing are the Ukrainians, NATO, and the entire Western world.

I don't understand fucking anything about this conflict, none of the news make any sense, it's scary how fast it deteriorates.
From a rational, pragmatic perspective, none of this makes any fucking sense. But that's assuming all humans are rational, pragmatic people. Emotions such as extreme pride would cause one to question such a concept, and Putin's pride is on the line here.

To put into perspective how badly the Russians have bungled their logistics they are still fucking about on the northern fringes of Kharkov, which is all of fifty miles from Belogrod on the other side of the border. This like launching an invasion of Dallas from Fort Worth and getting bogged down once you cross I-35 east.
Why do I get the feeling that bungling military logistics is a proud Russian tradition? They've had this problem since World War 1, and they haven't fixed it yet? What kind of history books are they reading up there?

Basically, the Minsk agreements were not abided by anyone and the War in Donbas continued since 2014. Russia sees Ukraine as a threat to them personally. Note how they're in driving distance to Kiev? The opposite is true; Ukraine is in driving distance to Moscow. If Ukraine--which is a friendly US state since 2014 thanks to John McCain--were to join NATO, the current war would be reversed. Just because Putin is the aggressor doesn't mean he doesn't have legitimate concerns. Also, the US is clearly using Ukraine as a Chess Knight to make a blitz to the King, hence why NATO is supplying them with arms. Just in case you want more proof of glow niggardry.

Here's the thing, though: if Russia didn't attack, then NATO would be nothing but talk and politics. America and Poland are the only nations that meet their requirements for funding NATO, every other country treats it as almost this nebulous relic of the old days, almost like a nonexistent obligation. Even if Ukraine joined NATO, if Russia doesn't attack, then it's all just hot air, and business will go on as usual. However, since Russia DID attack, NATO has become a real necessity in the eyes of Europe, and NATO has been funneling fortunes to fund the Ukrainian war effort while the Russian economy sinks like the Titanic.

@LORD IMPERATOR

He must have been drunk and on krokodil while listening to his own propaganda if he thought it was possible for one moment, that or he's become demented and delusional in his old age, nobody wants to have anything to do with Russia and China, those that have "positive" relations only do so because they are forced to or afraid and that won't work anymore, you need actual incentives.

"The East" has fuck all to offer to anyone but poverty and extremely false sense of security and order, even their moral grandstanding of being the last bastion of resistance to the "degeneracy" of the west falls the fuck apart when you look closer and see just how much fucked up shit their elites and citizens do on a daily basis that everyone pretends isn't a thing. Hell, I bet Russians would take progressivism and girldicks over current regime if it came wrapped in even a bit of that western prosperity and open market but let's not pretend they will ever be given an option to choose anything other then who's going to be their executioner, the local commissar or the enemy.

China at least pretends to help it's "allies" develop and prosper with scams like "Belt and Road" wtf does Russia do for it's satelite states and allies? Installs some Putin's Bitch as a dictator and tells everyone to STFU or else?

It seems like it's the after-effect of guys like Putin eradicating any voice of dissent in his ranks; disagreeing with him means you're a traitor, which means that his inner circle is full of butt-kissing sycophants who agree with everything he says.

I've been saying that this whole time. Putin's Russia isn't fighting the western elite because they're interested in standing up against "degeneracy", they're only fighting the west because they want to be the world hegemon, not America. The nation itself is drowning in alcohol abuse, massive amounts of contraception and abortion, organized crime and monopolies crushing any competition, among other things. People pretend like it's an ordered Christian society, when really, it's a land of godless people who have mostly given up on setting the stage for the next generation, as they kill their kids in the womb and drink vodka like it's water.

Basically, yes. At least China, being the second-largest economy in the world, has the capital to spend and pretend like it's helping other nations, before their economy collapsed because of the housing bubble crash and many other problems. Outside of technology and nuclear expertise, it doesn't seem like Russia can offer much. I mean, at this point, California can probably give other nations more money.

This invasion have basically killed any myth of the Russian military as some "unstoppable badass army". And you can't deny now EU and NATO is going to take their defense more seriously now, Europe is unironically getting more united than ever before now

Also, China is definitely going to use this war as a case study for their invasion of Taiwan. They're definitely going to postpone it to actually train their military, and strengthen their economy to avoid the mistakes Putin did in this war by making it as independent as possible

I think it's still a little too early to declare that the Russians are a giant with feet of clay, especially if they do complete the encirclement in the southeast that it looks like they're pushing for. However, the longer they dawdle around outside Kyiv and Kharkiv the more the 'it's been 2 3 4 5 days a week, guys, they're workin' on it!' starts to sound like cope.

It's as I said before: NATO before now was all hot air and politics for every member aside from Poland and America, but after Putin invaded, now everyone in Europe realizes its necessity. Russia ironically created the foe they were fearing. This invasion was meant to scare people, instead it united them. Even if Kiev falls, its defenders will only be seen as martyrs. And if Kiev doesn't fall, the defenders will become national heroes once the war stops and the negotiation starts.

That will take time. Although their crashing economy is an even more imminent threat. That, and a possible civil war looming with Xi Jinping and Jiang Zemin battling for control of the Chinese Communist Party. The fact that Xi keeps pressing the PLA to go to war in the state it's in, with many commanders seeing war as a fool's errand, coupled with the fact that there are more than enough CCP members that side with Jiang and want Xi gone, points to a possible conflict within China. Question is, will the west back Jiang, or Xi?

The Russians lost Kharkiv to the Ukrainians, did they not? They took it in the initial invasion, and Ukraine took it back. What's to stop Ukraine from repeating that with Kiev in the odd case that the Russians do take it? The Russians will be spending a mountain of manpower for potentially nothing but a victory that can be undone, and won't accomplish any meaningful change.

It's not just about Ukraine anymore, nor is it about the number of tanks or troops Russia can dump into it. Look at Russia's GDP. Look at the GDPs of the countries Russia has seriously pissed off, not even counting the US. This will not magically be over for them when they declare victory in Ukraine. I think people gravely underestimate what a wakeup call this has been for Europe. Even if they take Kiev right this instant, Putin has fucked Russia for years to come.

What is genuinely impressive is just how fast countries around the world changed their tune about the situation. Germany stopped being indecisive and now helping Ukraine (and even arming themselves), Orban and Hungary changing from Putin's allies into a supporter of EU's sanction and policy. Hell, even China was forced to abstain on the last UN Resolution vote

Funny thing about wakeup calls, they don't last very long.

The self fulfilling prophecy is a tale as old as time and whatever merit there might have been to claims of NATO expansion and aggression Putin just IRL fedposted so hard that he did the best thing he possibly could've to ensure NATO is the most revitalized and anti-Russian it's been since 1989. Should've just kept playing the rocket man game.

damn it only took Putin 5 days to get here?

The big difference between Russia invading Ukraine and China invading Taiwan is that Ukraine shares a land border with Russia while Taiwan is an island. In order to take an island, you have to surround it with a naval blockade, disable its key ports and airfields, and make damn sure you can support your soldiers as they make landfall and fight their way inland.

China's problem is that Japan might come to Taiwan's aid. That means putting a largely untested navy and airforce against a seagoing people who are sitting on a lot of tried and tested US military hardware. And that's not to mention any economic sanctions that would surely follow.

China's better off sticking to its original plan of conquering the world economically. Western leaders might not like foreign armies invading their countries, but they do like money and China's got plenty of it.

It seems like the nukes are their only serious leverage point now. They don't seem to have credible force-projection ability if they're struggling this hard against a literal neighboring country; it's quite possible that an attempt at a European invasion could turn Fulda Gap into Fulda Gape for them unless they devoted 100% of their forces and logistics to it.

The only quasi ally Putin may have outside of Xi, who will knife him in the back at the first oportunity, is India. Their annoying Youtube boosters are confused. How dare Joe Biden put sanctions on Americas Bestest friend evar, Supah Powah India. Yeah Pajeet Friends you are at the moment where you must either Shit or Get the Fuck Out of the Street. This is not a situation where you can play both sides as usual. Considering how much of your economy is Leveraged by the US, it might be time to stop buying Russian Arms and talk about opening an account with Lockheed Martin. Those Javelin's practically sell themselves!

I don’t think Russia showed anything too decisive about their abilities. They advanced pretty steadily with a smaller force only stopping when they waited for negotiation. There are signs about Mishaps but those happen in any event.
Above all else I am no military expert shit I usually suck at grognard shit if it gets too technical and most people commenting on Russia’s abilities are equally as useful. But it is fun to shitpost like I am General Patton so sometimes I forget I am not and say things with authority I don’t have.
