What is the goal of the West, now that the Russia has launched an invasion?

First, nobody in Western governments cared about Ukraine yesterday. Nobody cares today. The Western powers want Russia to become bogged down in a long war of attrition a la Afghanistan. Russia's demographics are in decline; she cannot replace her losses. Should enough gopniks be gutted by old Ukrainian fishwives, Poland, Finland and the Baltic States will have a fighting chance in the next Northern war, which (take out your betting slips) is coming.

Ukraine will lose this war decisively despite the frothing media coverage. That's the point - the weapons being sent now by the West are intended to be used during a guerrilla campaign.

Because the Americans have decided they do not want to be world police, there is now a geopolitical vacuum. Countries such as Russia are waking up and acting like real countries again. Hence, the most consequential thing to come out of this war will not be anything related to Ukraine itself, but rather German rearmament. Soon, Germany will act like Germany. France is already acting like France, etc. The Franco-Germany alliance will break because they have very different interests in very different spheres. In the long term, Germany and Russia will reorder Eastern Europe according to their own interests, as they have done every other time. This war, I suspect, is a last hurrah for a united NATO.

Some final rambling points: the people who hated you yesterday, hate you today. Remember Media companies have been struggling because their output of Soviet-style black propaganda and distilled fatuity is no longer a money maker. Yet, wars are popular and real STALKER is going to sell as much as video game STALKER. The oversell is desperation.

I've been wrong before, but I seriously doubt that India of all nations would opt for backroom deals with a heavily sanctioned Russia. India and Russia have ties dating back to the Cold War but India was firmly on the side of Yugoslavia as a co-founder of the Non-Aligned Movement. They accepted Soviet aid, but they never once aligned themselves politically or militarily with the Soviets. There are genuine circumstances that prevent India from throwing in their lot with Russia that I can't seriously envision the Union government ever looking past. Here are a few that come to mind:

• Russia is a close ally of China's. India hates China with the white-hot intensity of a thousand suns due to all the border incursions in Ladakh, their naval operations within the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean, and their support of Pakistan. Any unequivocal Indian support of Russia would only come if India is guaranteed Russian support against China, which won't happen in the foreseeable future.
• Politically and economically, the Union government is much more integrated with the USA and Europe than it is with Russia. India stands to lose a lot more than it stands to gain from doing business with Russia as it right now. India isn't anywhere near sufficient enough to deal with the potential blowback from doing any sort of backroom deals with Russia.
• India already has plenty of partners to obtain fossil fuels from, namely the KSA and other such Gulf nations. Getting LNG and oil from Russia to India over land is a fucking logistical nightmare because Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan all stand in the way. To put things into perspective: Iran is easier to get hydrocarbons from than Russia is, despite Iran being the second most heavily sanctioned country in the world.
• India and Russia haven't been close politically, economically, or militarily since the death of Indira Gandhi and the liberalisation of the Indian economy in the late 80s and early 90s. This isn't to say that India lacks a soft spot for the Ruskis, because they certainly have one. However, the apex of the India-Russia friendship has long since passed and right now they're more like fond acquaintances that occasionally meet together for big gatherings.

The only reason why India is playing softball with Russia right now is because of its historical commitment to neutrality along with past memories of Soviet support against Pakistan. It's not because Russia has a chokehold over the Indian economy or because the current BJP government in India sympathises with Russia over Ukraine.
