I honestly don’t see Ukraine really “winning” this unless they agree to a compromise and give some territory to Russia. I think the media is overhyping Ukraine’s ability. They’re definitely putting up a fight, but Russia has the better arsenal. Sanctions are already affecting the ruble, but it won’t be enough since so many European countries rely on Russian oil

You're getting a Ukrainian view i.e a "highly favorable view" to Ukraine on the conflict, they went full Volksturm in the first 24 hours and given the current military situation Russia has a huge advantage on the ground. There are 20,000 or so people living on the Kurils. One of the islands (Iturup) with a population of about 7000) is supposedly majority Ukrainian.
But there are no Japanese on the islands because they were expelled after the war. The people on the islands might vote to become part of
Japan (or Ukraine) but part of the basic dispute about the islands is that Japan wants them back but the not the people now on them.
