Like in any military, for most dudes it's a job that pays better than nothing. A lot of places in Russia are fucking dirt poor with high unemployment.

Even still It's highly likely to be part of Russian policy to have a "light touch" compared to the US in Iraq. Russia can't afford a long occupation economically, even assuming there wouldn't be an insurgency. They want as much of the infrastructure, the government and the army intact as possible so they don't have to repeat America's nation building failures.

Azov has been fighting for years and is 1500 strong at last report. The Chechens were promising to kill them all. The first wave of Chechens has reportedly been routed. Mariupol also has a large military presence beyond just azov. If the going gets rough azov will just start crucifying Russians and putting them on display like in 2014.

They blocked google maps in Ukraine in hope of slowing down the Russian Army. But in situations like these, people with no medical knowledge would immediately try to look for the closest hospital on said application.

Google has dead people on its conscience.

No, Google did the exact opposite in order to prevent stuff like that. The live traffic was showing routes that no one should be driving on as wide open roads, so instead of marking every road in Ukraine as closed, they just hid the traffic layer. You can still look up the closest hospital, you just can’t see how many people are currently there anymore. Go to Google Maps yourself and try if you don’t believe me.
