One of the things you have to realize is some of the worst NPCs are people in positions of moderate power, generally in bureaucracies as middle management. They cause a stir from the middle that gets up to the top. The people at the the should know better, but either give into the pressure, or just don't want the hassle of whipping the mass of subordinates. Isn't it any wonder our society feels like a constant HR meeting?

I laughed them off. First time I watched Kony 2012, I shouted "This is the white man's burden! It's the most jingoistic shit I've seen since Iraq WMD!" and didn't stop it.

The algorithm amplifies who it wants to amplify. Most websites don't work like KiwiFarms or 4chan nowadays. People exchanged having an unregulated shitpile to sift through for a seemingly personally tailored newsfeed.

Hate to say it, but he's probably right here. Russia has sunk millions billions of dollars at least into this war, has taken non-insignificant losses, triggered fresh waves of dissent against the Putin regime, sunk their economy, and are becoming increasingly isolated from the western economy. Even if they take Ukraine, that'll be another massive resource commitment as they try to hold up an unpopular regime in a hostile area.
Meanwhile, this gives western analysts fresh intel on Russia's military capabilities, the military is able to see actual combat tests of shit like the Javelin against modern Russian armor, NATO is experiencing a new wave of political interest, and there is a chance Europe may be pushed towards greater energy independence. Maybe I'm just overthinking this here, but love it or hate it it seems like a net win for NATO and the west no matter the outcome.

There have been estimates by the Finnish Military General Staff of the war costing "over 5 billion USD/day".

The economic sanctions have frozen significant amounts of Russian assets. It is unlikely that Russia is able to keep the cost of war from trickling down on their people if this lasts for more than a few months.

Eh. I'm still doubtful Ukraine is going to actually "win," but even from a purely military-strategic standpoint it's at the least not going as smooth as the Russians probably wanted it to go.
