And then there was endless argument between our command & mechanics about what "operator-level" maintenance means; we had officers and NCOs who absolutely refused to let their drivers do anything beyond motorpark monday PMCS. It was almost impossible to get drivers to stick around the motorpool for operator-level tasks during servicing; like actually removing the wheels & breaking them down; because "that's what you mechanics are for". Those lazy fuckers popped smoke towards the PX, DFAC, or TOC as soon as we showed up or recovered their vehicle.

And then went for convoy live-fire training in Graf a month later. Being a non-divisional maintenance unit, we got attached to anyone who was short mechanics. Baumholder was with our battalion (who mostly didn't deploy with us), and Graf was for going downrange with 1ID.

There must be many SGMs who have a rock hard boner RN over Russia suffering strategic and tactical vehicle losses from a lack of Motorpool Mondays.

It is inspiring to myself and many of my fellow kiwis to see the West's response to the current situation in Ukraine. What is it that they used to say?

So what will become of these brave volunteers? I googled it and it doesn't look good, kiwis. This is the actual wording in the Geneva convention:

Art 47. Mercenaries

1. A mercenary shall not have the right to be a combatant or a prisoner of war.
2. A mercenary is any person who:
(a) is especially recruited locally or abroad in order to fight in an armed conflict;
(b) does, in fact, take a direct part in the hostilities;
(c) is motivated to take part in the hostilities essentially by the desire for private gain and, in fact, is promised, by or on behalf of a Party to the conflict, material compensation substantially in excess of that promised or paid to combatants of similar ranks and functions in the armed forces of that Party;
(d) is neither a national of a Party to the conflict nor a resident of territory controlled by a Party to the conflict;
(e) is not a member of the armed forces of a Party to the conflict; and
(f) has not been sent by a State which is not a Party to the conflict on official duty as a member of its armed forces.

There is no support structure to *actual* volunteers, I would assume.

The fact this was sanctioned and encouraged everywhere so quickly is why this is a cover story to get around GC with US mercenaries and assets.

I don’t see how they’re mercenaries, even if they are retards. Mercenary implies you are only fighting for money and could switch sides at any time for the same reason.

Spanish Civil War set the precedent for foreign volunteers that fight for ideological reasons. If Russia wants to be an ass, fine, but this is going to turn into one more fuckup on the pile if they go out of their way to make examples.

Well, it really doesn't matter either way. Whether they're considered mercenaries or insurgents which would be the more accurate term, they're still unlawful combatants under the Geneva Convention which means Russia can put them on trial in their civilian criminal justice system. Russia surprisingly does not have the death penalty, but life in prison in a Russian prison is not really better. I'd assume they'd get life because Russia has a similar policy to non-citizen criminals as Japan which is that they tend to get much harsher prison sentences than their own citizens do. Russia could also use them as diplomatic bargaining chips too though as they did with pussy riot, where they commuted their sentences in exchange for the lifting of some US sanctions under Obama.
