Pretty sure it doesn't, at least not on it's own. From what I remember there's layers of keep-alive signals that have to fail. Certain key points in Russia have to get glassed before Dead Hand does its thing.

It's either a lie and the reactor has been safely shut down, or not even shutting down the reactor would matter when the nuclear fuel starts burning and spreading a cloud of death everywhere.

Why is it apocalyptic? Keep in mind that a bunch of reactors have failed and >1000 nukes have been detonated since 1945.

Just goes to show nuclear power isn't safe. It can't stand up to giant tsunamis, disabled safety systems or assaults by cold war era weapons. Better ramp up solar and wind for the pods.

I don't think people know just how much real estate you would have to devote to something that could match coal/gas/nuclear. It's not as simple as putting at few panels on your roof and you can disconnect yourself from the grid.
