Why keep him around? Well, why get rid of him? He never had the means to pay back the "loan" and they knew that when they gave it to him, so they're not going to be mad about that. Cutting him loose would just cost them a loyal ball-licker and attack dog and get them nothing. They're just going to quietly not pursue repayment and drop it years later and sweep the whole thing under the rug, like the TransLifeline scammers are doing with their high-profile grifter founders who stole over $300k in donations from their "charity", and the government won't do shit about it. All "nonprofit organizations" should be assumed scams at this point until proven otherwise. Scams at best, there are a lot of NGOs that are conspiring against the public interest and getting tax-exempt status to do it.
Anyway, they gave him the money hoping to have him get the names of some of their anonymous critics so they could intimidate them, without their fingerprints being openly all over the effort. I'm sure they're disappointed with the complete lack of results, but I'm also sure that Pat just blames that on the judge and maybe his lawyers. I still don't know how Pat's lawyers managed to completely fail at presenting a passable motion with three attempts and the judge explaining to them what they needed to do. Did Pat just assume that he knew everything and micromanaged his lawyers' efforts into complete failure? Did he go with someone who was totally and catastrophically incompetent solely because they good at stroking his narc ego? Were his lawyers once competent before they were bitten by a diseased mosquito and suffer a brain-damaging illness? I don't know.
