President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

I really hope the Baltic threat was just some dick posturing by Putin and not an actual threat

Another similarity with WW1 is how the combat ended up devolving into intense shelling because Russia's ground troops are losing against Ukraine's defense, and how the fog of war and propagandas are creating this chaotic and conflicting information of the war

Yeah, that's what I really like about Democracy, especially ones that is truly democratic. Sure, it's going to led to some inconsistency, but at least the people actually have the power to influence the government provided they have enough voice. Is it flawed? Of course, but compared to other method of government and power, democracy is the fairest one (that actually works)

I've been wondering about this. For the US to joining the war would definitely require a bipartisan support. I know a lot of the Democrats are pushing for some actual actions against Russia, but what about the GOP? I'm not that knowledgeable about American party politic, so if possible please tell me

Considering the quality of their troops, I'm not surprised the Russians just resorted to shelling everything since their soldiers would easily give up or get captured by their enemy.

Neocon old-guard GOP people from the Bush years want to go to war, Trump fans and libertarians don't want to go to war, and in some extreme cases, outright support Putin and think his invasion is justified.

@LORD IMPERATOR is mostly right, although I don't agree with him saying that Trump supports Putin. Your rank-and-file GOP voter can see it's obvious propaganda to get them killed and want to stay neutral. That's why the Left is saying it's unacceptable to be neutral.
I agree with Drag-on knight. I don't think Trump or his surpporters surpport Putin. But just want to stay neutral. People like me agree with that because Russia isn't some third world middle east country but an actual country with nukes. Well you have legit news anchorman legit asking Biden to go to Russia and denuclaized them. Which for some reason the U.S media seem too retarded to realize how dumb that is.

The claim that Trump Surpporters surpport Putin. I feel is just a why to slender them as traitors by lefties.

But you also have to understand for certain Trump supporters their not too happy with Ukraine for covering up Biden and his family (mostly Hunter's) shady activities. So even through it sounds petty to let the country get invaded by Russia. Wouldn't be surprised if their's still stop anger there. Which like I said before you should blame it on the Ukraine government not the people who are getting their homes destroyed.

I get that there are a ton of ethnic Russians in Ukraine, but I'm not sure why they would feel loyal to a different country, especially a country that is bombing the shit out of their own neighborhoods.
Because they ate up the russian propaganda. It started back in the 2014 when Putin put useful people in DNR and LNR, provoking the war between them and Ukraine. All federal tv channels were moaning about dirty ukrainians attacking poor DNR and LNR that just wanted to be free, while completely covering up the russian army presence. Oh how the tv was loud and abnoxious, because every single moment they used to feed more and more propaganda. And all this time Ukraine did attack those "republics", so now Putin used this as an excuse. And some people do believe him, both in Russia and there.

Actually, now tv acts way less loud. Huh, seems Russia is fucked even more than it was in the 2014.

So if we are just talking numbers, yes, but if we look at military theory - Clausewitz specifically - war is just an extension of politics. The Russian soldiers don't want to fight in this war, it's hard to know what the Russian people think but I speculate they aren't too thrilled at the moment - hence martial law, stricter rules on public expression.

This is how the US was defeated in Afghanistan, and Vietnam. Ultimately, the Taliban/Vietcong know they could never defeat the US in a fight, they just held out until the US left due to political pressure.

Exactly the same fate befell the Soviet Union in Afghan in the 1980s.

The question then becomes, which side can continue the struggle from a political position. From all accounts, it appears that Ukrainian people will be in this one for the long haul if required.

As for the artillery, awful stuff - but crucially, the Ukrainians can - and are - targeting it and attacking supply lines. The Russians can't be everywhere, and as we see some militia with man portables have been successfully confronting top tier Russian armour.

Lastly, it's a horrible thought, but in WW2, the siege of Leningrad lasted for nearly 3 years. It was constantly under artillery bombardment and yet it resisted the German military and never fell. It would a human tragedy on a titanic scale - but it certainly doesn't mean defeat is inevitable.
Russia is implementing a whole slew of new laws prohibiting criticizing their war or in any way supporting Ukraine as we speak. Protests are being punished harshly, only going to get worse. Revolution or a coup by Putin's own generals is the only solution at this point. That's probably all that needs to be said on that side of things.

If you consider differences in culture and general context, I'm not sure if Afghanistan and Vietnam really apply to the current situation that much.
Ukrainians have to watch their entire lives collapse around them, it's not just some desert or jungle. I can't imagine how much it's going to take to repair damaged cities, and their struggle invites even more destruction.
I just hope they prevail. At the very least they're making invaders pay a hefty price for their arrogance.

Edit: Oh, and I forgot to tell you a little story regarding Russian soldiers' motivation. My younger brother went to pick up some documents from the conscription office (enlistment office in the country where you get to choose), and had a talk with a man sitting there.
He was in his 30s. He intended to renew his contract and go kill Ukrainians for money. He said he had a wife and 3 kids, on the question regarding what his wife thinks about it, she apparently replied that their kids would see him as a hero.
They refused his submission because he has small children. There's some humanity left in there, I suppose?

World 'narrowly averted a nuclear catastrophe last night', says US envoy to UN

The world narrowly averted a nuclear catastrophe overnight when a fire broke out during a Russian seizure of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, the US ambassador to the United Nations said.

Speaking at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, Linda Thomas-Greenfield said Russia’s actions were “reckless” and “dangerous”.

By the grace of God, the world narrowly averted a nuclear catastrophe last night. We all waited to exhale as we watched the horrific situation unfold in real time.

The attack overnight reflected a “dangerous new escalation” in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, she said, warning that “imminent danger” persisted, citing Russian troops whom she said were 20 miles from Ukraine’s second-largest nuclear facility.

Russia’s attack last night put Europe’s largest nuclear power plant at grave risk.

It was incredibly reckless and dangerous. And it threatened the safety of civilians across Russia, Ukraine and Europe.

She demanded assurances from Moscow that such an assault will not happen again.
Strange that US Officials tried to backpedal from Russia attacked the nuclear plant only to did this in the UN. Some diplomacy trickery?
Also the Chinese Ambassador to UN is saying "The Ukrainian crisis is undergoing complex changes". As always, the Chinese are talking in euphemism, so the jury is out in what their actions will be now

The 25-year-old has been speaking regularly to her mother, who lives in Moscow. But in these conversations, and even after sending videos from her heavily bombarded hometown, Oleksandra is unable to convince her mother about the danger she is in.
"I didn't want to scare my parents, but I started telling them directly that civilians and children are dying," she says.
"But even though they worry about me, they still say it probably happens only by accident, that the Russian army would never target civilians. That it's Ukrainians who're killing their own people."
What a shit feeling this must be.

To be fair it was first assumed they had attacked the reactors themselves, but it turned out the only damage was to the training facility far away from the actual reactors.

So, I'm currently 400 pages behind in the general megathread and desperately hoping that things in this thread have changed, because you fuckers need to learn to archive. If that hasn't changed, I'm in for a frustrating 400 pages.

EU ready to adopt more Russia sanctions if war doesn't stop, EU Commission president says

The European Union is ready to adopt more sanctions against Russia if President Vladimir Putin does not stop the war in Ukraine, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Friday.

“We know that this conflict is far from over, and to be very clear, we are ready to take further severe measures if Putin does not stop and reverse the war he has unleashed,” she said alongside US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Brussels.

“Thanks to this coordination [with the United States], we have together designed, developed and deployed sanctions in record time. Sanctions that demonstrate our determination to make Putin pay a price for his war. We do not take these measures lightly but it is clear we need to act,” she added.
Von der Leyen said over 40 countries were now “partially or completely” aligned with the sanctions, saying it was “testimony to the determination of the global community to reject this invasion.”

Speaking after von der Leyen, Blinken commended the European Union for its response to Russia, saying, “this union is strong, it’s united and it’s acting.”

“If we allow those principles to be violated with impunity, then we're opening a Pandora's Box, in every corner of the world for this to happen again and again and again,” Blinken said.

He also warned that the war in Ukraine “may not be over soon” and that the US and European allies must sustain tough pressure on Russia until it ends.

"Unfortunately, tragically, horrifically this may not be over soon," he said.

"We have to sustain this until it stops, until the war is over," he added.

Independent Russian newspaper says it is removing articles on Ukraine war due to threats

Independent Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta said Friday that it was removing articles on the war in Ukraine, saying that new Russian censorship efforts necessitated removing those materials.

"Dear friends!!" a statement on the Novaya Gazeta Twitter account said. "Military censorship in Russia has shifted to [using] the threat of criminal prosecution against both journalists and citizens who disseminate information about hostilities that differs from Defense Ministry press releases. Therefore, we are removing materials on this topic."

Novaya Gazeta is a highly respected investigative paper. Its editor, Dmitry Muratov, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize jointly with Maria Ressa last year.
Russian lawmakers have advanced legislation criminalizing the spreading of false information discrediting the Russian military. Russia's communications regulator issued warnings to the country's few remaining independent news outlets telling them to stop spreading what it calls false information, including references to the military operation in Ukraine as an "attack, invasion or declaration of war.”

Independent Russian television station TV Rain and Echo of Moscow, a storied radio station, have both shut down broadcasting amid the crackdown on Russian media.

White House expected to send Vice President Harris to Poland, source says

The White House is expected to send Vice President Kamala Harris to Poland, a source familiar with discussions tells CNN.

The trip would come as the White House continues to show support for Ukraine as it enters a dangerous new phase in the Russian invasion.

This trip would also come on the heels of Harris’ latest international travel to the Munich Security Council in Germany, where she met with US allies and partners including Ukraine’s President Zelensky.

The vice president spoke with Poland and Romania’s prime ministers by phone earlier this week.

US ambassador to the UN says world "narrowly averted" nuclear catastrophe last night

United States United Nations ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said the world “narrowly averted a nuclear catastrophe last night" following the fire at Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

She called Russia’s reactions “reckless” and “dangerous” saying it put the largest nuclear power plant at grave risk and it threatened the safety of civilians in Russia and across Europe.
She called on Russia to withdraw its troops from the plant to ensure operators have full access to the site and are able to communicate with regulators, ensure shift changes, and the safety stability and security of the plant.

“Reliable electricity is vital for the nuclear facility, as are back-up diesel generators and fuel. Safe transit corridors must be maintained," she said. "Russia must halt any further use of force that might put at further risk all 15 operable reactors across Ukraine – or interfere with Ukraine’s ability to maintain the safety and security of its 37 nuclear facilities and their surrounding populations.”
Thomas-Greenfield said praised "the ability of the Ukrainian operators to keep all six reactors in safe conditions while under attack and to report as they were able to their nuclear regulator."

“We are gravely concerned that the Ukrainian operators are now doing their jobs under extreme duress," she added.

The US supports the IAEA Director in his efforts to ensure nuclear safety and “prevent nuclear catastrophe in Ukraine”

She called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to not send his troops on a “suicide mission” against a nuclear power plant.

“Nuclear facilities cannot become part of this conflict,” she said

“Mr Putin must stop this madness, and he must stop it now," she added.

What Russia is saying: Meanwhile, Russian UN ambassador Vassily Nebenzia told the council that the nuclear plant is fully operational and there is no threat of a release of radioactive material.

Nebenzia insisted there is “artificial hysteria” and “lies about how Russian troops attacked the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.” He claimed the area was taken by the Russian army back on Feb. 28. He said in the area adjacent to Zaporizhzhia, a Russian mobile patrol was attacked by a Ukrainian "sabotage group."

The plant and adjacent territory are being guarded and experts have been brought in to manage the facility, and a similar situation exists in Chernobyl, he said. The security of facility is being ensured by Russian Armed forces and Ukrainian operators, he added.

“Together with the people of Belarus and Ukraine we lived through the tragedy of Chernobyl, so we are more interested than most in maintaining a normal radiation situation throughout the territory of Ukraine,” he said.

US energy secretary calls on Russia to allow Ukrainian nuclear operators to work "safely"

US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm tweeted Friday that “Russian forces are in control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant” and called on Russia “to allow the Ukrainian operators to continue to operate safely – including allowing shift changes at both Zaporizhzhia and Chornobyl.”

In a series of tweets, Granholm also praised Ukrainian operators for being “extremely responsible in how they responded to yesterday’s appalling attack by safely taking 2 of the reactors offline.” Granholm noted one reactor is currently “operating at partial capacity to keep the power grid stable.”

Granholm also pointed out how the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant “is designed to withstand significant shelling or bombardment.”

“We have seen no elevated radiation readings overnight. Safety systems are intact, and reactors continue to receive cooling,” Granholm tweeted.

US President Joe Biden’s envoy to the United Nations has accused Russia of preparing to use banned weapons, including "cluster munitions and vacuum bombs," in Ukraine.

Pssst Joe, Russia isn't a signatory to the Convention on Cluster munitions, which you should know since neither are you, you fucking alzheimer riddle tard. As for vacuum bombs aka thermobaric weapons, they're not banned either which is probably a good thing because we used a fucking ton of them in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Don't get me wrong the way the Russians are using them seemingly indiscriminately almost certainly makes their current use illegal, and potentially a war crime, but claiming they're banned, or illegal weapons in and of themselves is disingenuous shite.

Poor Poles, don't they have enough shit to be dealing with what adding that hag to the list?

Not exactly news but they removed the Ovechkin special from Papa Johns! Only pizza place that delivers close to me, large stuffed crust (FAT), and a 2 liter soda for like 18 bucks. Not sure if its related to Ukraine but it was there 2 days ago and now its not.

Brandon's original plan to shit his pants and do nothing is more helpful to the Ukrainians than this.

Some of these VDV memes are pretty baller.

My sincere condolences to their loved ones, though. Seriously. Nobody deserves the shit they're getting aside from maybe the NKVD or the SS.

One of the things that I (as a Burger) have trouble understanding about Europe is how ethnicity and national allegiance work in areas where the borders shift every few years.

I get that there are a ton of ethnic Russians in Ukraine, but I'm not sure why they would feel loyal to a different country, especially a country that is bombing the shit out of their own neighborhoods. Especially given that unlike in Yugoslavia, they mostly seem to share the same religion, more or less.

There are a ton of what one might call "ethnic Mexicans" in the southwestern US who settled here 200 years ago before the area was the US, but there's no assumption or expectation that they would prefer to be in Mexico. There's also a bunch of ethnic French, a handful of ethnic Swiss Germans, and a handful of ethnic Russians dicking around where they didn't cross the border, the border crossed them.

Are there still people who identify as Austro-Hungarian? Or people who identify as Thuringian?

I guess I don't understand why ethnicity would trump national allegiance when you're a "minority" population living among people who are very, very similar, to the point where you look the same, the languages are mutually intelligible, and one of your own is the president.

I'm a Burger too, but I'm also a first generation Asian immigrant from a part of the continent that shifted borders several times within the last 200 years. To put things bluntly, it really depends on the history of the region. In my homeland's case, we didn't experience the whole "nationalism" thing until the British started meddling in our affairs. By the time they left, my country was already split apart artificially by borders that had no consideration for ethnoreligious groups that were already living there for centuries. My ethnoreligious group just so happened to get split between multiple countries without any consideration for our history in the area, so understandably we were pissed. Diaspora communities abroad being separated from their beef at home tend to let bygones be bygones because you're several thousand miles away from all the drama. When you're actually in those regions, old scabs get picked off and you're suddenly reminded of why everything is so fucking awful.

I'm not a Slav, European, or in any real position of authority to make this claim, so take what I say with a grain of salt. With this in mind, Ukraine spent centuries changing hands while the people languished under some form of repression. The Ukrainians were first part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, then they were absorbed by the Russian Empire before briefly experiencing the taste of independence. Unfortunately, the USSR came in and re-asserted the doctrine of Russification. A lot of Eastern Ukraine where ethnic Russians live (to my knowledge) haven't lived in that region for centuries; they were descendants of Russian migrants who came to Ukraine during the latter years of the Russian Empire and the early days of the USSR. Ukrainian (and Belarusian to a lesser extent) is much closer to Polish in terms of linguistic heritage than it is to Russian. Russians, Belarusians, and Ukrainians all claim their ancestry from the Kievan Rus, but each ethnolinguistic group developed along a somewhat different path until the Russian Empire came along and Russified the regions. Ukrainian and Belarusian as languages were heavily repressed under imperial and later Soviet rule, and it wasn't until the early 1990s when Belarusian and Ukrainian were no longer repressed. Unfortunately, centuries of Russification can't be undone overnight; Belarus still speaks more Russian than Belarusian and the same was true of Ukraine until the mid 2000s (if I'm not mistaken; please correct me if I'm wrong).

I've been wondering about this. For the US to joining the war would definitely require a bipartisan support. I know a lot of the Democrats are pushing for some actual actions against Russia, but what about the GOP? I'm not that knowledgeable about American party politic, so if possible please tell me
I've started hearing just random people talking about Ukraine when I go out, so I'm getting the impression that the temptation for the government to do something is increasing. Just last night had a Republican guy telling me how he wished Biden wasn't so useless and would do something tough about Russia.

It's a bit surreal when I compare that to a few days ago when I was seeing people on twitter mock GOP congressmen for trying to do public events showcasing their support of Ukraine.

When it comes to congressmen in general though, I think the GOP especially would be in favor of taking action since that's just the traditional position of the basic bitch GOP to be in favor of military conflicts. Also it'd help profit all defense contractors who I would imagine are talking to congressmen constantly these days trying to get them to buy shit to send Ukraine.

The only group I can see being adamantly against a conflict would be a couple congressmen that are pretty fringe like Paul Gosar or Thomas Massie who voted against a resolution (strongly worded letter, no actual effect) denouncing Russia's invasion.

There also have been polls getting done I suppose to test the waters regarding whether they can escalate things. Since there is the problem that the general public may not connect the dots that things like instituting a no fly zone effectively means a direct conflict with Russia. There were the talks a few years ago by Democrats wanting a similar no fly zone in Syria, so I'm not sure how outlandish it'd be for them to attempt something here.

Ya people are stupid. that includes a lot of opinions in this thread. It reads like babys first war thread. War with Russia is a retarded idea, and the Ukraine is a corrupt shithole. Heres a video with some actual useful info:

Probably current map.

If it is correct, Russians are still going nowhere. Loooong kawai is probably stuck.

Rumours/unconfirmed informations:

- ATO is retreating in coordinated way.
- front near Kiev is stabilized. Ukraine perforemd a partialy succesful counterattack.
- Mariupol is under siege (sad, hope that Azov will make many russian mothers sad about their sons death).
- more than 350 000 soldiers are mobilized by Ukraine, and at leat 1/4 of it are workers that returned from EU.
