President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

And Russia agreed to respect Ukraine's independence in exchange for them giving up their nukes. They didn't respect that deal, why would they respect yours?
My point exactly. A promise they make now, they can break later, when it's in their best interest to. If that wasn't the case, they wouldn't have attacked Ukraine AFTER Ukraine gave up its nukes.

Not a unique trait to Putin or Russia.
Gaddafi gave up his chemical/biological weapons and missiles on the promise from Bush that the US won't ever interfere with their country and the moment he stops wanting to cooperate with the US, a very convenient uprising happens and the country is flooded with cash and weapons from the US.

Oh and assertion from Obama around then that the US would only supply non-lethal aid to the opponents of Gaddafi was a giant fucking lie revealed after leaks and FOIA requests a couple of years after he left office.

Difference is, Putin's transgressions are far worse. His actions against Ukraine prove that no country should ever trust Russia, especially if they border it. America did some slight-of-hand to have a tyrant get overthrown by his own people, whereas Putin invaded a sovereign nation that was right next door. That's like what if the USA invaded Canada or Mexico again, in the 21st Century.

Singapore has outlined details of the financial measures it will impose on Russia, after it announced on Monday that it would take the rare step of imposing sanctions.

In a statement the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said:

"We will impose financial measures targeted at designated Russian banks, entities and activities in Russia, and fund-raising activities benefiting the Russian government. Digital payment token service providers are specifically prohibited from facilitating transactions that could help to circumvent these financial measures. These measures apply to all financial institutions in Singapore, including banks, finance companies, insurers, capital markets intermediaries, securities exchanges and payment service providers."

The statement describes Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as “a gross violation of international law”. It is the first country in Southeast Asia to impose sanctions.

Full details of the measures are on the ministry website.
SINGAPORE!? Fucking Singaporean actually doing something outside of making and counting their money?! Holyshit...

Apparently, Russia is mobilizing their armor all the way in Khabarovsk and moving them by trains to Ukraine
Look where it's on the map LOL

Would be a shame if someone on Russian territory sabotages railroad or the trains themselves

Fill me in quick, how hard is this going to hit Russia? I know they’re planning to sanction Crypto from Russia, but what does Singapore’s involvement mean?

"Selling Alaska was the greatest tragedy of 19th century" - said Putin, "We must restore Russia's borders"
Before the democrats went all in on "Russian collusion" after Obama left office; they were very open to the idea of either selling or giving Alaska back to Russia. Even if only to fuck with a near permanent republican voter base.

Imagine Switzerland fused with Hong Kong, but with more chinks and malayan shenanigans. Its basically the hub for economy and trade in Asia especially SEA (south east asia), and even more so after HK fell under Chinese influence more few years ago

Report all threadshitting immediately. Try to make a personal effort to reign in offtopic discussion as well, but I will be lenient about that for now (IE, do not report unless its really bad).

This thread is for news articles and discussion of new articles only. If you have been banned from the Invasion of Ukraine Thread in Happenings and I need to threadban you here, you will be board banned.

He attacked Ukraine because it was becoming a NATO proxy, right at his doorstep. A NATO that told Putin to fuck off when he tried joining way back in the day. Putin isn't stupid, if he let Ukraine join NATO they'd turn Ukraine into the frontlines and start stacking troops on the Russian border.

I don't like what Putin is doing but from his perspective it was do or die. He already lost his biggest trading partner(Ukraine).
Thing is Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia all became NATO members in the same time span as Russia's application and they didn't invade them. They're going after Ukraine, and went after Georgia, because those countries have things Russia needs. Warm water ports, gas pipelines, arable land, all of it makes Russia a more powerful player in European politics. Because they didn't invade the Baltics when they joined NATO, I find it hard to believe the "they dont want to be caged" angle they're pushing. They have nukes, no one is going to invade them. I think they're pushing that because it makes them out to be victims, but they're just securing their interests no different to what America did in Syria. It's scummy but that's the game of geopolitics. Everyone secures their interests.

This thread has convinced me that Putin Derangement Syndrome is a very real thing. So many people running around calling this man an idiot who has no idea what he is doing when he was an agent for a secret service of a country that was headbutting the most powerful country in the world for years, survived the fallout of that country when they lost the cold war, and installed himself as the autocrat of a country formed from the ashes of the USSR under the guise of democracy. Hating Putin is all well and fine and I'm not sucking his dick or anything, but if you think he is an idiot you are grossly underestimating him and are delusional.

P.S. you are not immune to propaganda and there is a metric shit ton of it being exhibited in this thread.

I concur, and I would like to remind the thread that both Ukraine and Russia have a strategic and tactical reason to openly publish disinformation about both the enemy forces and their own forces. This has the immediate effect of making it impossible for the enemy to use the internet to gather any kind of useful intel on the position, progress, strength and equipment of your forces. If I was a commander of a force on either side of this conflict, I would want people to be exactly as confused and frustrated as they are across the internet, especially in this thread's mutant older sister in Happenings which is a perfect example of the exact thing both sides are aiming to instill in the spectators watching at home.

"Lastly, the great uncertainty of all data in War is a peculiar difficulty, because all action must, to a certain extent, be planned in a mere twilight, which in addition not unfrequently—like the effect of a fog or moonshine—gives to things exaggerated dimensions and an unnatural appearance." - Carl Von Clausewitz, On War

Unlike eras past we are living in a digital age where rather than the Fog of War it is instead an immense, dazzling and deafening cloud of static that is assaulting our every sense at every given moment. Threads like this are our best attempt to make sense of the cacophony, and the best we can do is attempt.

Shockingly, I find the Happenings thread less propagandized than this one. Certain posters are completely ignoring the West pouring gas on this fire and preventing meaningful dialogue from taking place.
