They signed the declaration of war at 2am and in the morning they were already firing shells at civilians.

I think you're romanticizing this war. This isn't about Russians fighting for their sovereignty or the self-victimization narrative the Russian media machine is pushing, the Russians try take Ukraine and see how the west reacts.

They have tucked their tail between their legs, like they probably predicted, at the threat of nuclear war, but I think the Russians did not foresee the impact of the economic sanctions and the backlash from the war...

Nope. I don't think Russia can win this. If Russia (and China) isolate against the globohomo, they will become shitholes and people will struggle to escape and romanticize the West.

In the mean time, the west will point at these shitholes and say "Look! Look what society without civilized ID chips and clot shots is like!" or whatever.

But the end game of Russia is not to get Globohomo to fuck off, it's to test the West and see how much they can push before they get pushed back.

This invasion was incredibly short-sighted because Putin probably expected the west to just let him have it. It is not about whether a nation is allowed to declare war because Russia never even actually used the term. This is the international equivalent of a smash and grab, meant only to enrich the people behind it.
I only disagree in that unless they massively fuck up (which is still a possibility) Russia pretty much cannot 'lose' this. They can certainly come out the other side much worse, but if they really want Ukraine, and no other country militarily intervenes, they're gonna get it. They can throw men and equipment at it until it works.
The reality is this isn't going to be a blow to globohomo, it's going to push everyone else into their arms. This attack sends the message that if you do not share a military alliance with western countries that it is open season on your ass. Russia has already lost the propaganda battle in justifying this war, no one is going to be interesting in sidling up to them after the fighting is done. For fucks sake, fucking China hasn't been interested in helping them.
Putin could have rode out the rest of his days as the funny meme-able 'alpha' president of Russia. Instead he's choosing to humiliate himself and the country in the home stretch. Never trust old retards who won't live to see the consequences with your country's future.

1. Russia launched an unwarranted invasion
2. A blitzcrieg nonetheless
3. The Russian Ukrainian narrative is used as a justification to capture territory
4. The Russian propaganda machine is overblating this issue and fabricating facts/events to further this narrative

There is a different point of view, also valid to our point 1 in question at least. Two Russian experts, one of them military, saw this as inevitable due to the actions of the West since 1990.

Not a big shock. The DNR and LNR don't have the most elite forces, even the Sparta Battalion, so I expect to see heavy losses as they try to crush the Ukrainians in the Donbas.
