The justification of Russia of fearing missile attack/military beachhead is ridiculous and hasn't been the military case for at least three decades. If Russia wanted to defend its citizens then it should have only too care of the threats rather than conquer the whole country.

Israel is the only Western aligned nation to have good relations with Russia and Ukraine, the PM has offered to host talks in Jerusalem but neither Putin or Zelensky were up for it. Israel has condemned the invasion but has not done anything of substance against Russia. This could be a sign of peace talks on the horizon or something else. Something notable: Bennet is Shabbat observant and doesn't fly on planes/ride in cars unless it's matters of literally life and death. He believes he has a chance to influence this war or else he would have waited until sunday.

It helps that Israel has immigrants from both countries so it's not politically smart to have any outright government opinion of the war, plus Biden's America almost certainely makes Israel look for other potential allies so it won't get betrayed like the Ukrainians did.

The Ukrainian government reportedly specifically requested the missiles despite their age.
But 700 are affected by tiny cracks which have led to corrosion and mean they cannot be used.
Germany is expected to deliver the remaining 2,000 missiles despite the fact they are no longer considered safe to handle.
A classified military document obtained by Spiegel magazine reads: “Owing to the obsolescence of the rocket motor, the Strela missile is no longer safe to handle, so it can no longer be fired.”

The more mask-off the Ukrainians go, the less tenable the narrative of "the lovable plucky underdog who dindu nuffin" becomes.

The whole thing is quite simple; prolong the war for as long as possible and force the Russians to cause as much human suffering in the country as you can. Even if you might have initially been a pro-Russian in Ukraine, once a Russian bomb blows up your apartment building and kills your neighbours, you might end up rethinking your position.

Even if the Russians win, this will force them to occupy the country instead of just installing a puppet ruler and letting the Ukrainian internal troops handle dissent. This will lead to massive strategic costs for Russia as they will have to fund and maintain their control over a hostile country in a way that is not so different to what happened during the Warsaw pact. It was the maintenance of this Soviet empire that eventually destroyed the Soviet Union.

In addition, if Russia is forced to keep troops permanently in Ukraine, any guerilla fighters in the area will have specifically Russian troops to target. Also, any strikes against the guerillas or crackdowns on dissent will be done specifically by the Russians. This makes Russia a clear occupying force in the eyes of the people. It would be much harder to raise a guerilla campaign if the people oppressing you are local kids from your hometown.

The sad reality is that the more people die and the more infrastructure is destroyed, the stronger Ukraine will eventually come out of this. I cannot see Russia being able to hold Ukraine indefinitely if things continue as they have. The Ukrainians have already started to feel that they are united in a war effort against a foreign enemy. The longer this lasts, the stronger this bond will be.

You know, I was present for the entire Taliban retaking Afghanistan thread last year AND the Israel/Palestine flare-up last year too, and neither of those threads got as testy and, well, hateful as this one. What is different? For this war, I know us typical AnNers are neutral -- maybe SLIGHTLY Russia-leaning (mostly because we're extremely anti-clown world) but the general hate and other users coming in here baiting is intense. I wasn't present for any of the other war threads and I think this is the first war I've ever decided to keep up with before. I've been coming here for the majority of the updates because as we all know the media is unreliable and scrolling through this theres a mixture of serious updates and funny memes. But you're right everyone's getting angrier at one another and its harder to see newer information and just generally chill with users who're being optimistic and calmly debating one anothers points.
Maybe its the fact that this war in particular is affecting everyone's IRL lives and being pushed in our face so much by social media but- I hope it mellows out again. I miss the shitty deviant art pictures people find and the actual updates.
