My feeling is that Russia expected NATO to join the war immediately and the whole Belarus to Kyiv unit was meant to be an inviting target because it's right next to Poland. They're under-equipped and under-trained, so they weren't meant to take Kyiv, they were meant to die and drum up support back home.

It is, none of the other maps show nearly those gains, if you went by that map Donbass would have been encircled days ago, I go primarily by this one.

This map show a slightly different Russian position (more modest gains in the north, further in the south), but perhaps it takes contest territory where RF has the advantage as Russian. My ill informed guess the aim is Kyiv and territory north of Crimea, west of Donbass, Lugansk, basically a coastal belt including Odessa. Once secured there might be a push along the Dneiper to Kyiv. Perhaps Zelenskyy would go into exile even before that, and Viktor Yanukovych would take his spot and await Moscow's instructions. That's my guess. I might be wholly wrong. Putin might quit to become a Buddhist monk.

I feel ya. I'm not hoping for a military victory by either side. I'm just hoping the peace talks are successful and they can put an end to this pointless war.

Unless Zelenski gets retired, not going to happen. I too believe it would be the best outcome.
