I don't know where people got the idea that Russia is competent from. Their ships catch on fire for no reason and their air force had a pretty high kill rate in Syria...against their own ground troops.

The only thing they're really good at is using fodder to lure defenders into cities and then using MTBs to surround the city and turn it into a ruin. Unfortunately for Ukraine they're actually quite good at this.

We have videogames like Modern Warfare 2, that portray the Russians managing to invade fucking Washington DC by tricking one satellite. There is Battlefield 3 and 4 where both funny enough show the Russian military and Chinese military being well very competent if you played through the single player campaigns.

We got tons of movies that show competent Russians so I believe it came from pop culture.

It does makes sense, if Russia is a joke, why should care about it.

But the elites probably realized that would not make anyone join the US Military so they play it up like how old school fascists would be like our enemies are strong but we are superior than them type of double think.

Kaspersky Labs do some of the best anti-virus research there is. They're a primary source, not just copy-pasting definitions from a public list. It was Kaspersky Labs that found and disclosed Stuxnet and they also caught the NSA's malware on their servers and if I had the time I'd find you the article that details what the NSA did (scary impressive) and how Kaspersky found it and removed it (great read, very detailed).

No, I can't agree with this - along with Trend Micro they are consistently one of the best anti-virus providers. What you really have to ask yourself is who you'd most be concerned about spying on you. Russian authorities or US/Five Eyes nations? For the vast majority of ordinary people in the West, they are far more likely to find their own country's cops kicking down their door than mysteriously appearing Russian cops.

Not that anyone has, to my knowledge, ever caught Kaspersky letting through malware. Kaspersky himself is a fascinating guy and scary smart.

I can't find the specific stuxnet white paper Kaspersky put out years ago that broke down the likely developer work hours and their presumed ties to an Israeli hacking group but there's this PDF anyone interested can check out. They're some of the best in the business and can dissect anything.

Kaspersky is very good and if you're just trying to hide from western glows, it's a good start. I guarantee you they will think twice about using some of their fancier kit on your computer if it runs kaspersky since Kaspersky yoinks interested stuff back to their servers automatically and so they'd be burning their good stuff constantly.
