Since nobody is actually posting content thus far and the first page will be absolute garbage I'll drop this overly optimistic map of Russia gains. I don't believe that the countryside is that well controlled, maybe the highways, but certainly nothing warranting coloring in that vast amount of space.

Having little to no control over the countryside does not prevent Russkies from massing up on the other side from kiev. Several thousand troops with lotta armor's already there. And besides, even some ameriKKKan maps show that hohols mostly dig in inside the cities (At least in chernigov\sumy districts) without conducting any strategical manoeuvers.

The problem with most of these maps is that it draws WW2 style "lines" when they're entirely obsoleted forms of measurement. This one is "closer" to reality but I still don't like the vast coloring down by the Crimea. This war is almost certainly going to be dictated by the vast amount of insurgents that plague Russia over the course of months or years and its important to note that Russia doesn't really control every little village and town in the countryside, they just destroyed formal national military units but left a seething population in the rear of their advancing units. Everyone should be very careful when dealing with these maps because they tell a false story. Every major invasion in the 21st century by a national military has been overturned by insurgent forces, the invasion of Iraq in 2003 had the US fleeing by 2009 as casualties were causing serious dissension in the country alongside the economic implosion, Iraq got dropped like a sack of shit. Afghanistan also was overturned in under a week after the US finally capitulated and left. I see no reason why Ukraine wont follow the same format.

I don't see why drawing WWII style fronts for this war is anymore problematic than, say, the Eastern Front of WWII. That had a much more spirited and consequential partisan campaign than the Russo-Ukrainian War will, I assure you, for the reasons that @Ow The Edge already wrote but also due to the incomparable level of brutality in the German invasion. You would have a point if we moved into the insurgency phase of this war, but we haven't yet done that and we probably never will if Putin sticks to Crimea and the the twin peoples' republics.

I can't blame the Ukrainians for digging in, to be fair. If they tried to do strategic maneuvers they'd get fucked. Unfortunately I don't think the Russians would post destroyed Uke convoys and broken down vehicles but that wouldn't mean it didn't happen.

I'm not general but I figure the current mission is survive as long as they can to extend negotiations and just cost the Russians more.

Agreed with Mussi, it's not really an issue right now representing control with such lines. While true Russia doesn't really control all the territory indicated on the map, it's also true Ukraine doesn't either; the purpose of said lines is more to show where engagements are possible. After all not like the Germans in WW2 controlled everything on their side of the line, quite a bit of occupied land went for long periods without ever seeing a single German soldier.

Russia's trying to reorganize its ground forces so it can actually make progress and not have to flatten the country.

(Also it's possible that Russia can't flatten the country because of logistical breakdowns in which case this war is about to get even weirder).
