'The Batman' criticized for scene of attempted subway attack on Asian victim

Asian Americans are raising concerns over a scene in the new movie “The Batman,” which premiered nationwide Friday, depicting a group of men following an Asian man off the subway with the intent of physically assaulting him.

The scene occurs within the first 10 minutes of the three-hour film, when Batman interrupts the attack and beats up the assailants, telling them that he is “vengeance.” This saves the Asian man, who appears fearful of Batman as well.

Critics on Twitter are calling the scene “triggering” and insensitive to Asian Americans during a time of increased violence against the community, regardless of whether the attack was intended as racially motivated.

Some are tweeting content warnings about the scene to Asian Americans planning to see it in theaters, and several people on social media are questioning whether the depiction was an oversight or meant to be a commentary about the prominence of hate crimes against Asian Americans during the pandemic.

The movie was primarily filmed between January 2020 and March 2021, according to IMDB, spanning much of the spike in anti-Asian hate.

Criticism of the scene comes in the wake of the high-profile death of Michelle Go, who was fatally pushed in front of a New York City subway train in January.

Warner Bros. Pictures, the film production company behind “The Batman,” did not respond to requests for comment.

Amid the backlash, some say they are grateful the movie depicts Batman putting a stop to such an attack.

David Chen, who hosts “Culturally Relevant,” a podcast featuring film and television reviews, tweeted that the scene was an ill-considered use of triggering imagery that would otherwise be acceptable if used constructively.

Underneath his thread, users criticized the attack as seemingly the only form of Asian representation in the film. Others viewed Batman’s response as heroic, or as highlighting the lack of police protection for Asian Americans when incidents like these happen.

But in critiquing the scene on Twitter, Chen argued that depicting such loaded imagery without making a larger point about the meaning behind it is still disrespectful.

“To me, this was an irresponsible and inflammatory use of this imagery that (knowingly or unthinkingly) gestured at real life horrific events,” he tweeted.

“It felt thoughtless [to] me and was triggering to many AAPI folks I’ve discussed the film with,” he wrote, referring to Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

Pretty tone-deaf to say this when you’re trying to profit off of the #StopAsianHate trend by taking a scene, out of a fictional movie, out of context

At least Batman saved him. If subway attacks are an issue, why not protest then?

Straight white people, men and women, can be shown being raped, murdered, tortured, blown up, and otherwise brutally destroyed.

LGBT, brown, and yellow people must be shown as hyper-competent, always safe, perfect specimens of humanity or it's a hate crime.
Asians also complain and consider it harmful if you portray them as smart or physically skilled or attractive.

I had the misfortune of watching Justice League 2018 opening night. You know what was one needless piece of virtuesignalling footage that was included? A scene where some skinhead limey chav hooligans just randomly terrorize a muslim store front and its owners. It wasn't like Superman or Batman or Wonder Woman went and stopped them, that footage was just there as propaganda for wojacks and dangerhairs.

When Japan had Aum Shinrikyo detonate sarin gas in the subways in Tokyo, anime and manga and video game creators at least had the gall to depict Jehova's Witnesses and accelerationists as supervillains you prove wrong and kill off directly. Here, everyone pusses out by being SJW faggots and being the morality squad supplanters. You beat the fuck out of those joggers and thug fucks, Batman. You do you.

Figures, I didn't find the three hour movie to be as Woke as I thought it would be. However, why the cynicism in this article? It showed that Asians do get targeted and that is an injustice; the justice being Batman. Regardless, a group of four Asians and Twitter are concerned about a fictional movie that really could have used some trimming down to maybe two hours tops.

I dunno maybe it's because it's a movie about a vigilante, Batman wouldn't have anything to do if nothing bad ever happened

OK, so make the group of thugs be Asian then. Got it. We solved the problem Reddit.

Ironically, isn't it a bit, uh, racist to hold a double-standard like that? Decreeing how people will be portrayed, or how they'll react to being portrayed, based on nothing but skin color and facial features?

Or haughtily assuming certain races just can't handle the trauma of seeing fictional crime and violence depicted in movies and need a nice, white, Karen to hold their hand and gently tell them it will be all right? Like they're the anthropomorphic version of one of those horrid little purse-dogs that celebrities carry everywhere?

Maybe someone doesn't like the mirror being held up? Showing that thanks to voting blue no matter who for 30 years there's a better chance of actual Batman saving you from crime than the real police in most cities these days? Especially if you're Asian? Because thanks to BLM threating to torch everything, you literally cannot arrest a minority? Unless they KILL you? And even then, it's a dicey proposition to get anyone to do their jobs and prosecute them?

This scene was in the earliest teasers before the film was even complete, so it was probably shot in like 2019 before people pretended to care about this

Also lol the one black hoodlum is the one to hesitate
