I (maybe somewhat cynically) am convinced Russia could reveal that the US released SARS-CoV-2 purposely and was planning the imminent release of an airborne strain of Marburg virus and after a week of being appalled everyone would go back to watching Netflix.

Im already half-convinced that they will reveal that at the meeting. I feel like Russia's about to pull some receipts.
but I agree, it will hardly make a difference, esp to the US public and all will be memory-holed in about a week or so.

Still it is troubling to see two powers openly talking about chemical and biological weapons in a war that is already pretty heated.

The Korean war is the closest we've come to outright conventional fighting with the Russians/USSR and back than they, along with China and North Korea, accused us of deploying biological agents on the north.

The world mostly forgot about it after we demanded an inspection led by the UN and Red Cross. They claimed the Red Cross was too biased and it kind of died from there.

The Ukes using chemical weapons doesn't seem likely. It would be morally difficult to defend under any circumstances and it would open the door to all sorts of retaliation steps on the Russian side. Also, to make a difference in the war the Ukes would have to use a whole lot of them. If they turned out to have massive stocks of those kinds of weapons just ready to go it would raise all kinds of questions.

Question for older, more observant kiwis: Has the US government/media used the phrase "false flag" to describe another countries supposed actions this much before? In Syria they constantly claimed Assad was gassing his own civilians or dropping nail bombs on them, but never that he was false flagging the whole thing to set up the rebels. Meanwhile the phrase "false flag" has made it into virtually every household over the last decade. Could this be a way to preemptively excuse any chemical or biological weapons the Ukes might use in desperation?

We're probably not going to see chemical weapons used by either side. The Russians are more likely to use them against Ukraine than vise versa. Ukraine wouldn't use them because they'd be killing Ukrainian civilians too, and then Vlad would return in kind. The Russians may deploy nerve gas if they can't take Kiev. They will probably imply that the Azov Battalion or Zelensky did it.

I dont disagree, but clearly the US wants us to believe that the Russians are willing to pretend they did to gain some kind of moral advantage. It seems odd that they would specifically claim the Russians will use the weapons of mass destruction to set up the Ukes rather than just saying that the Russians might use them.
