As a cosplayer, she may be intending "Lolita" to mean what the Japanese mean; i. e., a giant frilly lacy mess, and she's just drastically misinterpreted the rules of the Japanese Lolita fashion subculture to mean dressing in any way that's overtly childish. But given the general nonce-ish character of her friends at SFWA, my hopes are not strong.

As a cosplayer, she may be intending "Lolita" to mean what the Japanese mean; i. e., a giant frilly lacy mess, and she's just drastically misinterpreted the rules of the Japanese Lolita fashion subculture to mean dressing in any way that's overtly childish. But given the general nonce-ish character of her friends at SFWA, my hopes are not strong.

Thanks for the thoughtful response. I became aware of the Lolita subculture thing while working on the post. It apparently has a big overlap with Steampunk, which is huge at Sci-Fi cons, of course.

The Lolita cosplayers seemed to fall into two categories: those who wore over-the-top ballroom gowns, garters, corsets, heels, a small hat or very large bow, etc.; and those who just really try to look like young children. I felt that the person I was featuring fell neatly into the second category.

Also, the naked doll stuff really creeped me out. Additionally, an adult who can spend hours coloring in coloring books strikes me as different from someone who just likes to add some extra buckles and ribbons and pastel coloring to their Steampunk attire.

But wanting to dress like a child, naked child-like doll photography, and her association with known pedos all runs together into a very unsettling picture to me. Yes, the "gothic lolitas" of cosplay fame (the most kiwi-compatible are probably the /cgl/ board on 4chan circa 2014 and whatever examples we have on BP) are generally adult females, not children.

I don't think she'd be referring to that type because they are absurdly elitist and would be constantly sperging about outfits. The top of that field of spergs make their own costumes, or design them and pay top dollar to have other people do the sewing.
