Actually GPS could work like that. GPS transmits 2 signals primarily.
One is for military use and needs an encryption key on your device to decode and other is in the clear for civilian use.

And they have demonstrated the system can turn off GPS over different areas with exercise Red Flag
People tend to forget that GPS's mission is military. They civilian signal is just a gift they give us at will.
This is why Russia, the EU, and CHYNA, have all set up their own constellations.

But I don't think they have turned off civ GPS over Ukraine. The 1st sign it happened would be the cellular network would stop working. Cell sites use GPS for phase synchronization with adjacent cell sites. And russians stuff would be looking to GLONASS not the burgers GPS.
The point of Red Flag was to test the ability of the USAF to react to a loss of GPS by American forces. It was not a test to "black out" CPS for another military force;.

Blocking out GPS is very complicated because its based on the number of sats you can see in the sky from your position. To black out many areas, you have to black out alot of surrounding territory. You can't just black it out over a constrained geographic region with borders.

Can’t it be both? We already have people calling Putin the good guy in all this.
It could in theory. But it isn't in reality. The threat is so overblown on its face that buying it is laughable. And beyond people buying propaganda, which I will be fair and say happens on both sides of any issue, a lot of people are pro-Putin to essentially 'own the libs' or in kinder terms to be contrarian.

One thing that has not been discussed is that the Russians have potentially captured a Javelin or two, assuming that they are more modern variants Both the Russians and Chinese will probably be very interested in picking it/them apart and reverse engineering it/them. Same goes for modern Stinger variants as well as NLAWs. Russians are sorely lacking in a shoulder fired AT weapon and top attack missiles in general with only the Kornet tripod/vehicle mounted ATGM being capable of doing so with an alternate firing mode.

The lines drawn for supporters in this conflict in the US have largely been traced on top of the existing mainstream divisors from what I've gathered. I imagine Euros are more universally against Putin by default due to proximity.

American lefties are suddenly extremely pro war and American righties, particularly younger ones, are talking about draft dodging.

nobody would feel sorry for the United States if China were to take control of Canada, people would just be laughing
people would be laughing because they dislike america yeah
and then america would invade canada and the laughing would stop
and the people who are now saying "NOOO PUTLER STOP YOU CAN NOT DO THIS" will then say "NOOO DRUMPF STOP YOU CAN NOT DO THIS"
and the people who are now saying "ukraine shouldn't have poked the bear" will then say "canada shouldn't have teased the eagle"

I’m going to go with the assumption that any man-carried weapon falls into enemy hands soon after it is made.

I have a hard time believing Russia needed to kill some Ukrainians to get their hands on a Javelin. Ukraine is corrupt and has ties to Russia as is, I don't think it would be hard to tell Ivan to talk to Sergei to talk to Vlad to get Misha to borrow a Javelin from the armory before things got hot.

Yes but it proved the system could black out an area.
Your also glossing over the fact that that GPS has 2 components. A civilian unencrypted part and the military encrypted part.
The military could turn off civilian access to GPS if they wanted and keep allowing the military to access it.

And again I am not saying they did here. Just that they could. This is why China, RU, and EU built their own systems.
The people who are claiming they turned off GPS over Ukraine are retarded. It would have tons of secondary effects and be noticed in neighboring places like poland.

I'm not super surprised in all of this. A lot of the newer alternative talking heads on youtube and the like are notoriously anti-war and soft on Russia. Tim Pool doesn't have the brains to push back on the Anti-Ukraine BS when his guests spout it, and his news editor Cassandra Fairbanks is virulently wanting to ride Putin's dick. Steve Bannon keeps ringing his CHINAAAAA bell, and apologizing for the bald shitheel that is Putin.

On the left, the ones who have moved away from the mainstream progressivism, Glenn Greenwald, Jimmy Dore, Hassan, Matt Taibi and Tulsi Gabbard fall back into USA sucks mode... mixed with their anti war conspiracy mindset it makes sense that they would fall for the bad info from idiots like Oliver Stone, whose love of dictators is older than most of the Pro-Putin people he is giving excuses to.

Then again, populists always suck at foreign policy, so I shouldn't be surprised that the Populist Left and Right are united in this.

A nuclear blast holds a lot of potential energy. But the idea of using a nuclear detonation in the atmosphere as a EMP weapon is stupid. First off you're never going to test for the scenario as nobody is going to be testing nukes on actual cities and critical infrastructure. Secondly if you fire a nuke at D.C. or Moscow the missiles are going to be launched anyhow, nobody is going to wait around to see if it's going to be detonated in the atmosphere or not. You'll only see this shit in movies and video games
Shielding is a thing and the only thing you need is to preserve the controls.
It’s cheap and easy to do and yes, you can absolutely test an EMP’s capabilities in the desert with equipment to see if the pulse will fry the sensitive transistors. Just more fear porn.

I am wondering the same. If Ukraine is split then I wouldn't be surprised if the US and EU just make things worse (again) by working to rapidly fortify nUkraine and instituting longterm plans to reel them into NATO and/or the EU. #neveragain
I think if there was ever a chance to draw down NATO, it is gone now. The only way NATO falls is if someone attacks a member and the rest of them look at it and go... nah... not gonna defend them after all.

Uh, my dude... it's called the Starfish Prime test. Luckily it was over the Pacific Ocean and only knocked out the Hawaii Power grid (with only 5.6 kV/M). The results of the test were so terrifying that we immediately shared them with the USSR during the height of the cold war. Why do you think detonating nuclear bombs in space is banned by international treaty?

Besides Starfish Prime, there's the Minuteman III Hardness Surveillance Program. Our ICBM electronics are about as hardened as you can get. I can't find the video on the open Internet but there's video of a failure and I have seen hardened electronics burst into flames with my own eyes. It's a shame I can't share the video with you because they actually play Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire when it happens because they have a morbid sense of humor.

Your questions are all answered in more detail in the Wikipedia article I originally provided. The energy isn't "generated from nothing." When a nuke is detonated in atmosphere, the energy (megatons of TNT energy, fren) is absorbed by atmosphere and the ground, so only a city is destroyed. When a nuke is detonated in vacuum, the energetic gamma rays keep traveling until they hit something. In this case, they strip electrons from particles in the upper atmosphere and create a Compton effect electrical current, which interacts with earth's magnetic field on continental scale.

An easy way to think about it for a layman is a nuke detonated in space bends the Earth's magnetic field like a trampoline. The area of effect coverage is caused by the Earth's magnetic field "springing" back into place. So, the energy is coming from the nuke itself interacting with the dynamo in Earth's core. Is this really so hard to believe? You've probably seen the destruction of one Nuke with your own eyes - now imagine if all that energy would only really interact with the national power grid.

Remember, we're talking EMP effects (~27 kV/m) on a continental scale. In theory, a Faraday cage could protect the United States power grid... but a Faraday Cage around the entire US power grid? That is massively fucking impractical. like more impractical than building an ESA vault around every power draw on our electrical grid. You can look out your window and know this protection doesn't exist.

True, but how many of your appliances are currently plugged into an outlet this very moment?

Based on these, I am absolutely certain that you don't know what you're talking about. If you're curious about the subject, I recommend buying a college textbook or taking a course. I'm just a retard on the Internet and my knowledge is very surface level - I'm not going to be able to answer all your questions on the subject. Or you can choose the believe the Orange Man is tots protecting your laptop and bank account - it makes no difference to me.
Constructing a Faraday cage is only needed for the controls. You’re not going to fry a transformer or any other large asset with an EMP. The cables to the controls can easily be shielded. Voilá, hardened. Also, detonating in the atmosphere works great in cheap simulations. Once you add the topography, EMP effective’s takes a big dump.

So, no, it’s not a big deal.

so you're suggesting America is going to annex Canada? are you kidding?

Yes MOTHER FUCKER I DO! The Bay of Pigs was fucking exiles trained by the US, but sent on their fucking own to DIE because Cuba already knew the invasion was happening. They told the marines in Guantanomo to stay the fuck away and not provide support, and the only two planes that DID provide support had to disavow even being part of the United States before they did.
Then by implication Crimea's Little Green Men, the LNR and DNR weren't acts of war waged by the Russian Federation against Ukraine?
so you're suggesting America is going to annex Canada? are you kidding?
No he's well versed in Fallout lore.
