RWBY - The Hindenburg on which Rooster Teeth rests its hopes, dreams and future

the second I heard Kinny that's pretty much the moment I need to get the gist and drop the video. Also Jesus Christ, these types of video formats are just designed to pander to retards who get their personality in tabloids/magazines/zodiac signs aren't they?

speaking of TVTropes and similar websites, hadn't anyone stopped and ponder for a moment; to whom are they exactly made for? Writers don't go to a website to jut down what tropes to avoid or use, they can and will mingle with other writers and talk about do's and don'ts's in writing, or analyze other people's works and implement some aspects or elements to their other projects.
There are a few people who use the names of said tropes as terms while talking about writing & sometimes do jot down the tropes to use & avoid (I had a friend who did it). I myself am the latter (the analysing type).

You need to read some of the author's notes of the more popular fanfiction where they use it as some kind of sponsorship. That's the only value it has unless you find trope language being used in a work by chance and you're trying really hard not to headbutt your screen or step on your phone.

"Now has a TV Tropes page."

*Good writers
Well, it isn't a left-wing hugbox for it mods, so there's that.
Doing the bare minimum isn't enough to make something good, it's sad that we've reached that point though.

Cliches are basically narrative short hand but frankly I think that analyzing the bigger picture of the narrative in a holistic sense is more important than just looking at a character or scene and going "Hmm yes, this is representative of [cliche]. I am SOOOOOOO smart". Personally I'd go a step further and claim that just looking for tropes (I hate that goddamned word) actively makes you a worse writer since focusing on each individual element on that small of a scale really takes away from the full sum of the parts and how they should all work together. It's like a stew, it's not quite so important what you put in it as it is how they all work together. I feel RWBY is a perfect example of how focusing on individual elements over the whole ruins the brew.

"Oh, so it's no good then?"

Alright, we're finally going to talk about Fixing Adam here.

This right here is the finalized Adam design. As you can see here, he is wearing a heavy, bulky coat, with a square, symmetrical design, and the symbols on the coat aren't present at all, save for the sleeves and back. He wears this weird ... corset vest tank top thing underneath, with no way to store or properly use his Wilt and Blush. No mounting point for Wilt and Blush, and his Iaido movements look awkward with the long sleeves and coat hems.

What made the canon design work was that it was a slim, asymmetrical, curved double breasted design, that was the defining characteristic. It made him look sleek, it made him look quick, it made him look sophisticated and it made him look intimidating every time he swung his sword. The use of black with red accents made for a strong contrast, while there's a lot of "muddiness" in the use of dark red in his designs. He looks like he will be bogged down every time he tries to use one of his combos, because that is a heavy, and thick looking blazer.

The militaristic design still made him look sleek, as it portrays him as a more aggressive and intimidating man out for blood, with its use of square double breasted coat and double belt. He still had a more unique, broken up profile that made him distinct.

Also, the variety of shapes in canon allowed him to look ... unique and distinct. Here, there's little detail in his coat, so it makes him look bland. No lapels, a boring symmetrical design, no change in shape whatsoever.

Somehow, Mupa made the designs of a hotly anticipated character to be rewritten to be so ... blase. Wouldn't you agree?

What even is that shirt? The coat's just kind of bland and inoffensive, if unwieldy given his combat style. But that shirt is hideous.

...that's just Vergil from Devil May Cry.
View attachment 3056215
Virgil's shirt is not nearly that stupid. Virgil has far more class than this design.

Everything about Adam is Vergil from Devil May Cry! (Or at least just the fighting style). Monty made him that way.
One could definitely see that. From a design stand point, I'd say his original design was actually superior to Vergil's. From a character standpoint, Rooster Teeth screwed the pooch.

And here's the inherent problem here - I know they were really trying to hammer the bootleg Vergil theme going on, but they fail to understand that Vergil's animations and lore paint him out to be this superhuman force of nature, coated in special effects.

Adam is basically an above average guy with crappy special effects - which makes it easier to see the inherent flaws of combining a big and heavy coat with Adam's lightning-fast iaido.

Plus, most badasses and wannabes in trenchcoats are a lot slower in Adam - mostly going for powerful, slow sword swings, or just moving slow enough to shoot with guns instead.

Here, we see Mupa's early sketches with Adam's coat, which still had more detail to them.

And even something as silly-looking as trakazor132's sketch, still offers more freedom of movement than the final design they went with.

She claims Blake is "race coded Asian" which is bullshit since Blake is white as fuck and based off of a French character but go off.
When people disingeniously pull this shit about Blake they usually claim it's because she's a cat girl and their severe autism makes them think that, because nekos are Japanese, this is proof she is one. They also claim stupid shit like it's because she's drawn with more slanted eyes. If you look at the model, no, not really, part of that is her makeup and she's got sharp eyes because she's a cool (as in coolheaded) character, not a wide-eyed youth like Ruby. Menagerie just made them move the goalposts from Japanese to any Asian dark enough to use a prop for their shit arguments - Menagerie itself has no influences, it's just a literal dogshit generical tropical island with furries with cloth wraps thrown onto them.

At the end of the day Monty clearly came up with a cool catgirl design with a dash of gothic lolita and there's nothing else to it. RT are so creatively bankrupt, their best attempt after his death at cultural inspiration was to make the Chinese man native to a place with a basic bitch Japanese name where there are gingers and his dad is bargain bin Hanzo.

You can't just draw characters with distinguishing traits anymore without them being 'coded' a specific way. Can't have a character with narrow eyes or they're clearly meant to be Chinese, so making them dark-skinned in fanart is the equivalent to asian erasure. I spend too much of my time getting worked up about trivial bullshit but I think the race of fictional characters really takes the cake for stuff dumb faggots on the internet like to argue about. They make up all these retarded rules and regulations about what is or isn't 'erasure' or what equates to racial coding, all straight-faced without stopping to think for twenty seconds about how retarded it is.

If this were any other show but RWBY that would actually be a distinguishing feature too since Menagerie is essentially a giant refugee camp that became a country only about a century ago. Disparate groups coming together into a giant melting pot that ends up having no real identity of it's own due to it's young age is actually somewhat interesting.

"Coding" is the language of literary retards and everything a person says should be ignored the minute they use that term in any serious context. Its utterly meaningless and can be applied to every character for every head canon that the mentally ill come up with.

Except....that isn't done. And any argument Blake has can be destroyed by the fact Blake is basically a princess with loving parents.

Coding is a term for pussies while putting the onus on the original creator. They’re the ones doing the racial of profiling others based off of flimsy traits. It’s insidious because they accuse people of the crime of being -phobic then kick downwards even further despite (often because) the person was ‘ignorant’ or unintentionally whatever arbitrary shit they’ve decided that week.

I reserve my right to say NIGGER while writing whatever the fuck I want to and it will always be more soulful than characters written to appease an idealogy, they can all get fukt. Always remember, Anal Cunt was a successful band that sold albums and tickets.

TL;DR: They don't understand the concept of drip.
Hmmmm....

No lie, I'd rock a tame (just make the belt better) version of that IRL in around 2011-16. The only reason I can't nowadays is that colored jeans, which is basically anything that isn't a usual Blue, Black, White, Gray, or even Rust colored jeans, aren't in fashion anymore since 2016.

I'd never wear that Adam outfit even as cosplay. Eventhough I never cosplayed. While I would've wore the Iori outfit at some time once.

By the way, this is pretty much the best Iori outfit that exists. It moggs his OG outfit.

This is an old issue too. I still remember one of the critiques of Dragon Ball Evolution was that Goku wasn't Asian. Which doesn't make any sense cause Goku is a literal Alien Humanoid Monkey.

I thought his XIV outfit was pretty tight! Though I am admittedly a huge sucker for long coats and edgelords.

Copping the style of Iori's undershirt in XV for Adam's little vest is a bit too obvious. Most people in the fandom will readily over-look it.

As an aside, have any of you ever lurked in RWBY centered RP groups? If you've a passion for writing in any way, shape, or form, the potential for schadenfreude is absolutely palpable. From power-tripping mods, over-sensitive asswipes, and generally just very poor writers, they got it all!
