It makes you wonder why Ukraine never just built a border wall. Probably too costly. The whole thing is a massive failure on Putin and Russian intelligence. They fucked up hard on two major issues.
A. That Ukrainians would accept or even welcome the Russian like Donbass and Crimea, ignoring the different demographic disproportionately favoring Russia and ignoring that the annexation of Crimea and the War In Donbass for the past 8 years has led to significant anti-Russian government attitudes
B. That invading Ukraine in mud season is never a good idea which leads to any backup plan in case of wide spread, organized, military resistance to Russian invasion to run into a brick wall in many regards.
America being responsible is not even the argument being made, they're just taking the War on Terror and comparing them to the Russo-Ukrainian war & are like "Yep that's the same, and if it's the same that's justification for Russia."America is actually responsible for this, so the tankies are for a change totally right, but nevermind that. You don't have to believe that Putin is god's gift to the world to come to the conclusion that the reaction around this war has been insane and that no end state for Ukraine is worth nuclear war or even the recession that the economic measures will cause and already exacerbating. The basic argument in favor of the living standard of people in your actual society weighs vastly in favor of doing as little as possible for the same reason that while everyone agrees that Saudi Arabia having offed thousand of Yemeni kids is terrible it has yet to prevent states from buying their gas or selling them weapons.
Yes, the response to this has been schizophrenic, but not unpredictable nor surprising. How many years have we heard nonstop jabbering about Russia from Democrats? Everyone still thinks we're in the Cold War, that's the big reason why all these nations are reacting the way they are. The global relationships held with these particular regions during the 80s pretty much sum up why we aren't treating Saudi Arabia with the same scrutiny as Russia.
