President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

I can only remember The Guardian saying Putin is going to make an investigation of "who sent the conscripts to Ukraine" but I don't know whether or not he's saying it publicly
If true then one has to ask, is he fucking blind, deaf AND retarded? Those forces were sitting on UA borders for weeks and there was literally no way NOT TO know what kind of "soldiers" they were., Putin must have literally everyone in his circle lying to him while looking him in the eye, either because all loyalty is loooong gone and everyone is just looking out for their bank accounts or because as people here say, he replaced everyone who didn't whisper sweet, sweet lies into his ears is in a gulag.

This is Russia, so to run the meme into the ground... Why not both? Easiest way to look out for your bank account is to whisper sweet, sweet lies into Putin's ears.

I'm finding the whole thing of this constantly brought up hilarious.

The entire Russian military is made of fucking conscripts. There's no professional body (aside from the officers) at all.

Conscripts were always going to be the main damn body of troops going into Ukraine. There isn't some magical professional russian army hiding away, just waiting to pounce into Ukraine after the Ukranians have worn themselves out on the cheap and shitty conscripts. As the video posted earlier notes, around 60% of their entire ground fources are currently committed to the meat grinder and the other 40% is needed to watch the Finns and the Chinese. (Not that they'd be more than a speed bump going by the Ukranian performance)

They're desperately calling for the Wagner Group to bring every dog and his friend from the Middle East to come to Ukraine now but they're probably not in numbers to actually make a difference in any theatre and most of them are used to hit and run tactics and other methods which wont make much strategic sense at the moment.

I mean its very obvious by this point the FSB screwed the pooch in their assessment of the Ukranian support and government. With Zelensky holding somewhere in the 30s at the polls at the time? Yes, on paper 70% against him. Therefore 70% support to overthrow his government, right?

Thing is, when people get a "proper taste" of democracy they'll want to boot the bastards out themselves and feel the pleasure from voting accordingly. With some irony, Putin could've just waited for the next Ukranian presidential elections, slid a billion or so towards a more neutral or russian friendly candidate and sat back and waited. Far, far cheaper.

I have heard some people comment that China has a hard time understanding why governments around the world can't just will legislation into power on a whim like they do whenever they negotiate and I think Russia maybe having the same issue, once you've been a dictatorship where what the man says, goes, it's probably really hard to comprehend even the concept of lowly plebs rebelling, much less having a say in the process.

Idk maybe FSB agent in a drunken stupor gave Putin their analysis of Belarus and said "Ukrainians are 95% on our side, OMON is currently pacifying the remaining 5%" and even then their intelligence was based on some Belarusian government polling agency.

Russia and China show us what the danger of locking oneself in a censored, feel-good, bubble ends with. When your leadership ends up only reading the one newspaper that's written by their own fucking propaganda department their view of reality becomes warped and disconnected from reality and eventually such idiots always end up embarrassing themselves to hell and back because of that disconnect and then it's "YOU'RE ALL FIRED FOR LYING TO ME ABOUT EVERYTHING" and the quiet response is "we'd be fired for telling the truth a lot sooner".

Edit: Oh and let's not be fooled that the west is not going down that same retarded road, just look at certain american cities and how it's borderline illegal to mention the problems they're having, hell, a lot of problems the west has are about as discussable as the Ukraine Invasion is in Russia because god damn think of everyone who this information will potentially offend, we see this, we can take this, multiply by 10 and apply that to what Russian government in it's info bubble knows about the world.

That's because the entire "investigation" is just a big fat lie. Putin must have send those men because the idea of a Dictator not micromanaging a very important thing like war is hard to believe. But then why Putin said that? To pass the blame to someone else. The popular support Putin has is from the conservatives people, who people they could win the war without "paying the price". But as soon as people back home receives the news about their son/husband/brother death, they begun to question Putin. So the Putin has no choice but to pass the blame to someone else. Hence, the "investigation". In truth, nothing will most likely come out of the investigation, its all just for show.

Similarly about "not paying the price", the reason Russia is increasingly relying on the mercenaries like Wagner, the Chechen, and the Syrians is because now they can't send more Russian soldiers to the meatgrinder without people losing their support to him as Russian bodies continue to mount. This is also another reason why Russia has switched to long-range bombardment via artilleries and cruise missiles

US will try to convince China not to supply arms to Russia at key Rome meeting (archive)

Reports Moscow asked China to provide military equipment come ahead of talks the White House views as critically important for global balance of power
The United States will try to persuade China not to supply arms to Russia at a high-level meeting in Rome which the White House sees as critically important not just for the war in Ukraine but also for the future of the global balance of power.

Jake Sullivan, the US national security adviser, will meet his Chinese counterpart, Yang Jiechi, in the Italian capital amid reports that Russia has asked China for weapons to bolster its faltering invasion of Ukraine.

Sullivan will point out that the US briefed Beijing on Vladimir Putin’s intentions months ahead of the invasion, but that the Chinese leadership ignored those warnings, mistakenly believing that Putin was bluffing to gain leverage, according to sources familiar with plans for the Rome meeting. Sullivan will also argue that if China supplies weapons to Moscow it will be a further, historic mistake, and a turning point in global politics.

The Biden White House is anxious to prevent the Ukraine war further cementing a division of the world into two opposing blocs.

Sullivan and Yang will also follow up on agreements Joe Biden and Xi Jinping made in a virtual summit in November, to improve crisis communications between the two nuclear powers.

“We also are watching closely to see the extent to which China actually does provide any form of support – material support or economic support – to Russia,” Sullivan told CNN. “It is a concern of ours. And we have communicated to Beijing that we will not stand by and allow any country to compensate Russia for its losses from the economic sanctions.”

Sullivan said the US had made clear to Beijing that there would “absolutely be consequences” for “large-scale” efforts to help Russia sidestep sanctions.

Russia has also asked China for economic help as it faces severe western sanctions, but Sullivan told CNN the US was “communicating directly, privately to Beijing that there will absolutely be consequences” if China helps Russia evade sanctions.

The Financial Times, New York Times and Washington Post reported on Sunday about the Russian request for weapons, amid claims from US officials that the Russian military was running short on certain kinds of armaments.

The spokesperson for the US embassy in Washington, Liu Pengyu, told CNN he had “never heard” of the Russian arms requests.

“The current situation in Ukraine is indeed disconcerting,” he said in a statement. “The high priority now is to prevent the tense situation from escalating or even getting out of control.”

“It feels like the US-China relationship is moving toward a pretty significant fork,” Ryan Hass, former China director at the US national security council, said on Twitter. “If China materially contributes to Russia’s war machine in Ukraine through provision of materiel or significant backfilling, then China’s actions will accelerate the cleavage of the world in direction of adversarial blocs.

“It’s wise for the US to speak directly and privately with the Chinese at an authoritative level now to clarify the lasting strategic ramifications of China’s decisions in this moment.”

China has so far not condemned the Russian invasion or the mass killings of civilians in bombardments of Ukrainian towns, and has abstained on resolutions deploring the attack at the UN security council and general assembly. Xi last week called for “maximum restraint” in Ukraine after a virtual meeting with German chancellor Olaf Scholz and French president Emmanuel Macron, and said he was “pained to see the flames of war reignited in Europe”.

Xi also expressed concern about the impact of sanctions on the global economy, and the limitation that western sanctions are imposing on China’s ability to buy Russian oil.

Hass, now a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, said he did not expect to see any immediate breakthroughs at the Rome meeting.

“The results may take weeks or longer to come into focus,” he said. “Neither side likely to provide other with satisfaction. Outcomes may need to be measured in degrees, not black-white binaries.”

I'm sorry, what's your point exactly? My point was that the whole "RUSSIA IS COLLAPSING, PUTIN IS LITERALLY ABOUT TO BE SHOT" seems a bit too fed to me. My other point was that the British thought the same about the German Reich, and thought it would collapse a month or so into the war. The Reich was fairly stable, and as we know lasted until 1945. The point is, they predicted a fall, which didn't happen. Seems like they might be blowing their load a bit soon here. Unless the feds are behind the coup, in which case they'll just place someone worse
The truth is we don't know. And we won't know until or unless something happens. But common sense and some basic analysis lead to the thought that there have to be some rebellious thoughts making the rounds in Moscow. Especially in the High Military Offices and Intelligence Offices. These are largely people who remember the Soviet Days. And have come to enjoy being able to travel the Western World freely. And most Russian's on the street still seen shaky on why exactly they have invaded Ukraine. We've been saying something feels off in this regarding Putin. Maybe it is true... maybe it's time.
And then Donald Trump can make his move and seize the Frozen Throne of Moscow and declare himself god king. And begin taking out his revenge over Biden.

When is the last time Putin seen on public, even on a televised remark? This is genuine question, even Zelenskiy recently showed up to visit a military hospital
With a doctor that died..in February...that he awarded a posthumous medal to.

Maybe everyone is full of shit.

One would think, but Ukraine had forgiven Russia for similar matters before. Ukrainians are not really smart people.
The UK Burned down Americas White House, BFFs now.

And what is the alternative? Germans who saw them as subhumans?

I mean people forget history, but its both good and bad. I don't think there are that many "good" people in any country tbh. And most countries have sinned.

He continued: "He believes he is the most informed politician in the world.

"He loves to boast of his knowledge of geopolitics. So it is difficult to tell him something he doesn't want to hear.
Seems like a basic truism that the guy’s intelligence apparatus sucked. Putin looks like he believed he would be wrapped up in a day and that turned out false.

Though there are also all the people in the west that agreed 100% with Putin’s assessment. Seemed like many wanted to treat it as ridiculous to imagine people of Ukraine wanting to fight because they figured both governments involved were awful or took the more ridiculous stance that the presence of a gay pride parade would make Ukrainians long to live under a dictatorship. Then you also get those vaguely detached from reality and thinking those identifying as ethnic Russians would flock to Russia’s side after their town gets bombed by Russians.

It’s like they’re so desperate to stick to the talking point of NATO being bad they ignore everything going on in the actual region.
