Crime Iowa care home worker, 30, is charged over death of retired social worker, 77, 'she left to FREEZE to death outside facility for dementia sufferers - What $13/hour gets you and your gran-gran.

An Iowa care home worker has been charged with leaving a 77 year-old retired social worker in her care to die outside in -9F weather.

Catherine Forkpa, a 30-year-old employee of Courtyard Estates at Hawthorne Crossing, was charged with dependent adult abuse and intentional reckless abuse following the death of Lynne Harriet Stewart, 77, on January 21.

Polk County deputies said Stewart, a widowed mom of one, and grandmother of one, died of hypothermia after being found outside the facility, which cares for adults with dementia, in subzero temperatures. She later died at a nearby hospital, according to KCCI.

The lowest temperature recorded that morning was -9 degrees Fahrenheit.

Stewart had been staying at the assisted living facility, which houses people with dementia.

An online obituary for Stewart said: 'In 1971, she became a mother to her daughter, Sara Jayne Gwinn. She later met and married her husband Harry Stewart. Together with family and friends, they enjoyed many camping adventures, road trips, races, and making unforgettable memories.'

The tribute continued: 'During her career, Lynne worked for the state of Iowa as a social worker assisting families in need. In her free time, Lynne loved spending time with those she loved, creating beautiful gardens, listening to music, and reading novels. Lynne’s unconditional love, indomitable spirit, beautiful smile, listening ear, banter and wit will be missed.'

The Polk County Sheriff's Office had initially considered the death 'suspicious,' the outlet reported.

The assisted living facility was fined $1,500 in 2020 for not having a policy or procedure for their alarm system, reports from the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals show.

However, a year later, the facility was found to be compliant in a 2021 report.

The results of an investigation, conducted by the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals shortly after Stewart's death, have not yet been released as of Sunday.

Forkpa is being held on a $100,000 bond, according to online jail records.

Stuff like this is why my parents paid individual nurses to help look after my grandmother at home. The nurse could be making $13/hr looking after dozens of people, or $13/hr looking after one person and largely just watching TV.

Didn't understand why they'd do that at the time, but have to respect their wiser choices in retrospect.

I like how you can tell there's no way in hell it was a nog because of the $100,000 bail.

Wut?

Also - nogs and spics make some of the worst when it comes to elder care or infant/child care from everything I've seen. The vast majority of cases of blatant neglect like this or when you see someone chimp out on a kid at a daycare etc it is almost always a fucking black or Hispanic perp.

My mom's had post surgery care a couple of times at a specific facility in DFW filled with African imports who don't care about the patients at all. These fuckers ignore the residents and the management doesn't care because they're getting money from Medicare either way. Thankfully we were able to get her to a better facility for post op care more recently, but it's insane how bad it is out there.

If you give a shit about your family don't leave them in a facility like that.

I think he was saying that blacks get their bail set at $7.50 to ensure they get back to terrorizing the country as fast as possible.

He's right, but only in liberal strongholds where they use black people as weapons. Iowa isn't like that. At least, not yet.

$13 doesn't buy you a nurse, it gets you a barely trained unlicensed assistant who doesn't speak English and is there to play on their phone while grandma sits in a shitty diaper. I'm glad that your grandmother apparently didn't have any problems but a lot of the time these caregivers are useless whether thay have ten patients or one.

I honestly think hiring any teenage girl as an adult babysitter couldn't be any worse than the average nursing home employee.

imagine living to old age to just get killed by an underpaid wagie
It's the American dream to work your entire life so you can retire and have a couple of ok years before being murdered by a wagie who will one day grow up to be in your shoes. Granted, you probably murdered some old fuck while you were a wagie as well, you just didn't know about it.

You know, that sounds so much like the nursing homes i've worked at its scary. 90% of the staff are from various parts of east asia and several of them barely speak english to a degree the average person would understand, so you can imagine how the dementia patients handle that

The scariest part though is that I, as the security guard responsible for just keeping an eye on a single resident, make $3/hr more than any of them do, despite having no training whatsoever to deal with dementia patients

Its quite the system isn't it

There's a reason my grandfather called nursing homes 'God's waiting room'; good luck finding one that doesn't reek of depression and death.
