Yours society may bee more accepting than others i that aspect, but gender based discrimination still rampant and there still a huge power imbalance between men and women, this is why troons can force their ways in women's spaces so easily this alongside with a porn sick culture, depression, absent parents and a overly tolerant atitude where you can't critizes or shame weirdos for their behavior leds to this.
I think you're both right.
I don't know if this is a power level or just background info, but I travel and even move to non western countries a lot. A lot of the countries I move to are, in comparison to western culture, progressive someway but ass backwards other ways.
Some, you'd absolutely be killed for being outwardly gay on the street. Others embrace trans people but yet still hold fairly oppressive gender roles.
Western society still sits right in the middle in regard to gender roles and discrimination, so I'm not super shocked that many people want to reach out and fight against it.
On the other hand, those that are oppressed here (assuming we are talking largely about countries like USA Canada, etc) have it pretty fucking easy. You might not be able to come out in some deep bumfuck town of 2,000 people in South usa, but you still have options that people in other countries don't have.
I think its both the claustrophobic feeling of very real gender expectations PLUS the absolute privilege of living in areas where you not only have options to come out and find an echo chamber, but encouragement to find your (at least) partially funded hormone and gender reassignment treatments.
They get to play oppressed without actual oppression, and they get a society and health care system that's been forced to bow down before them. It's a pretty sweet deal.
