For the record hipsters hate Kant because they think Kant condones slavery, which presumably makes nonsense of his Categorical Imperative. But Kant was very clear that slavery was a necessary evil of the times, something to be abolished in what he called the Kingdom of Ends (where every person treats each other as ends rather than means. You can call it Kingdom of God in secular garb.) Kant also believed in what today is called "Racial Realism", which is presumably Rhys's contention, but Racial Realism was totally in accord to the thinking of his time. Racial Realism might even be objectively true.
