Why do people think Russia is going to have to occupy Ukraine? Their goal is to break their shit, kill the nazis, get the Donbaus Republics free or part of Russia, install a neutral or pro Russian goverment then leave. There shouldn't be a need to occupy the donbaus Republics. They don't care about the rest of Ukraine. This thread has been nothing if not a very stark example of Americans seeing everything through their world view and attributing goals + methods they have on to others. That's not an insult, but an observation.

People keep saying they will need to occupy like Murica did in Afghanistan but I'm seeing an exact replica of what happened in Georgia and the ruskies left right after they did what they wanted.

Interesting video I watched pointed out one of the major issues with the Russian military. They spend a large amount of their military budget on "Wunderwaffe" projects. Shit like hypersonic missiles, the T-14, the SU-57 and SU-75, and their Satan-2 ICBM program. Instead of pouring their R&D budget into projects they can actually afford to put into service to replace their aging aircraft and tanks, they pour it into projects designed to spook the West, but at the end of day can't actually be fielded in strategically significant numbers. Sure the U.S. also pours a lot into stupid expensive projects, but they can actually afford to field those stupid expensive vehicles fully.

There's also another reason behind it. They need to keep making that stuff, even if it's just at a trickle, so they don't lose the capability to make it. Once you've lost the ability to make some defense items, it's incredibly difficult to get it back. Some of it is also made in the hopes of attracting export customers to cover the cost, or make it a joint project.

I don't accept the belief the Russian people should suffer for the decisions of its politicians. I'm gong to brush up on my Russian out of sheer spite and contrarianism.

The Russians won't cede Kherson Oblast, that's where the dam that provides water for Crimea is located.

Also, they won't cede the Crimea-Donbass land bridge.

If you think that the Russians don't want to control new territories then you're sorely mistaken.
