I was trying to put my finger on what seemed off about what he wrote, and I think this image just about sums it up for me. One of my close relatives is a writer, and you can tell if you really know her. I can't think of how many conversations with her I had that made her eyes write up, that made her put pen to paper and jot down ideas... and how much it meant to me when one of those ideas survived (in a slightly modified form!) into the published version of her book. Does she make a ton of money from it? Nope! But I can feel the passion, the love, the excitement flowing out of every word she wrote when I read her drafts. She has a bunch of them that she's trying to get published now, with some success, because she doesn't want to regret never going for it. The sheer exhilaration she feels at writing something she's proud of, that she wants to share with the world, never fails to make me smile. I'm smiling right now thinking about her.
