Dobbo did do some playthrough videos, but I could never picture him doing YouTube for reals. It's a hellava lotta work, and as we all know, Dobson is against doing anything work or effort related. True, he can turn off comments and subscriber counts and like counts, but even scrubbing those from the public facing side, he'll still see all that on the back end. So YouTube wouldn't be the praise-only safe space he hungers for. And it would be hard for him to grow any kind of audience quickly enough to satisfy his ego.

Dobson is still out there, just using an alt. No way he isn't. Giving up drawing/tracing wasn't that hard for him since he hated putting in the effort and doing the work anyway. Now he's anonymous and can reeeee with the rest of the woke crowd without the danger of being called out on his bullshit hot takes. He's just parroting whatever the other woke people are saying/tweeting/posting, so he blends in.

He seemed to think that the life of a cartoonist would be exactly like his existing pre-college life: he would idly make doodles of exactly what he wanted, when he wanted to, with the only difference being that he would now make $75k per year doing so. When he discovered that he needed to work on a schedule, sometimes drawing shit he didn’t really want to draw (the 4chan commission is an absolutely flawless example of this) he barely put any effort into drawing, only begrudgingly doing the job.

He likes drawing just fine. He is just utterly incapable of making it his job.

I think that is true for Dobson around the time he did the infamous Metroid commission and onwards, but in the last few years of his active art-making, I think he slowly started to actually resent drawing, cause he had to increasingly admit that it was not paying off and that the asspats and praise he received in return diminished further and further.

I think his failed Patreon was an important catalyst of that developement, cause it showed him: His net-worth is barely in the tripple digits. The last nail in the coffin was the lukewarm reception of his magnum opus about a lesbian muslim vampire. No one picking up the 5k asking price for his patreon wasn't him trying to squeeze money out of some last few fanboys, I think it was him throwing a hissyfit about trolls being the main contributors to his soy-funds.

Honestly I doubt it as well. Sadly Dobson never seemed capable of accepting that his faults were to blame for his lack of success, and I truly think that is the main reason he reacted so vitriolically to criticism. When it comes down to it he just could not stomach that in order to achieve the fame and fortune he deserved it would require him to improve.

A slight power-level, but I'm sure most life long artists have had this same issue, when I was very young I started drawing and I always had a knack for it. Many artists start this way and like them I was decent at recreating things I observed but I was young and I did the typical young artist thing of trying to copy cool things I saw rather than learning fundamental basics; as a result of this I could draw the latest cool DBZ character but I could not draw free form. Obviously because of this it was easy for me to doodle something and get tons of praise from other kids my age or from adults and teachers so I developed a bit of an ego over it. Eventually though I met another classmate who was a far better artist and it gave me a nice healthy reality check, afterword I began to study figure drawing and construction shapes and my artwork improved as a result. The rest is unimportant.

The reason I bring this up is even though Dobson gave some lip-service to the idea of being made aware of his shortcomings via teachers and the such, I honestly don't believe he ever really did. I think Dobson stayed trapped in that ego trip of being "the artistic kid" and always just assumed he would eventually become a great artist as almost a divine right and as such his ego was always going to eventually be his undoing.

I do think Dobson has lost interest in art, but not because the act of drawing frustrates him or upsets him, but rather because he is frustrated in not getting the recognition he feels he should have gotten. Something about the way he ripped his Patreon and YouTube down just gave me this feeling of a man brought to aggravation seeing his low subscriber numbers and poor payouts and lashing out in a "take my ball home" sort of manner.

In another version universe maybe Dobson would have been known as a great 21st century animator, but in this one he's a pitiable blue bear.
