First, it's a mistake to assume most of these guys actually read anything longer than horny fanfiction, much less actual novel-length prose.

Second, their basic philosophy abhors adversity. That shit is only good for other people. Screw earning your happy ending, unless that happy ending is related to whatever BDSM kink they might be exercising that day. It's all about other people doing things for you, to the extreme of changing you so you're "better".

That's the whole basis for the pink goggles thing they've got going on. It's not necessarily the brainwashing per se, it's the effortless (from the part of the subject) change into something they consider "better".
