Diseased #Comicsgate - The Culture Wars Hit The Funny Books!

I remember clearly when he stated that campaigns are only successful if they reach 2000 backers. This was obviously before his campaigns dipped below that.
I don't remember him saying this, but it does sound like a very Zack pronouncement. Kind of like when he saw his campaigns struggling and decided to make a video proclaiming "CROWDFUNDING IS DYING".

If we're to hold Zack to the "2000 backers" standard, he hasn't had a "successful" campaign since Impossible Stars back in October of 2020.

would love to see this commission too.

Oh noooooes!!! 😭

Well, if anybody wants to collect the bounty, y'all can let Liam know that my real name is Scott Morrison and my address is 5 Adelaide Avenue, Deakin, Australian Capital Territory. Come at me, bro! 😤

Also, Dude, Manger is not the preferred nomenclature, MangR , please.
My bad. Thanks for the education. 😅

Why is Liam so threatened by Nasser, of all people?
Liam probably wanted to be known a The Writer of Comicsgate. During the early part of CG and their feud there was a notable lack of high profile writers in CG. If I recall there was Nasser, and The guy who was working with Jon Malin. Who was mostly known for writing a book about a pizza tree or something.

There was also Frog talking about working with Dave Sim. So Liam, the opportunist that he is sought to establish his little corner of comicsgate as home of The Writer of Comicsgate. There was clearly a need for writing talent in the early days (and arguably still to this day) and of course the claims of being mentored by JM Dematais. That's why I think he went after Nasser so hard. We see him be somewhat territorial with his spaces such as the time he banned WC from his youtube show for a week, being handy with the block button, and proposed time slots for CG youtube in order to not stream over each other. That Nasser was known for his writing is probably what lead to Liam's made up brain tear, not so much working on comics.

When he can't control the space he wants the lengths he will go to to exert influence over it know no bounds. Hence the infamous Bring Ethan and Jon to me now! clip. After all his efforts and backroom conversations intended to cancel Nasser failed we got to see his glorious freak-out.

Liam has at various points tried to be the 'Everything' of Comicsgate. His entrance consisted of trying to convince the class he was the world's greatest alcoholic who could drink a couple quarts of hard liquor without breaking a sweat. Then he made some asinine video walking into a store and swiping a bottle of water disguised as high octane and slamming it. In a suit no less. That was to establish his creds for manliness and comedy/video, I guess.

Then he was the greatest writer. Then Editor/layout guy. Then talent scout, then... Well, you see where this is going. Whatever could get him ingratiated to the CG shows and become 'one of the boys' at the cool kids table.

But Edwin and Mike managed to grab the 'dumbass' chair and during their competition over it, Liam got relegated to also-ran status there. Another failure to launch.

Then he became the fearless culture warrior who was gonna save comics because clearly THAT was an original idea. And as usual, he was overshadowed by people in the chat better suited and more talented than the budding star in waiting.

THEN he became Mr. Bloodsports because (notice a pattern yet?) AGAIN... this was a wholly original idea which no one in CG had yet tried. Except every CG show to that point just as a matter of course.

Unable to find a more worthy target than his damnself, Our unrecognized hero then nailed himself to the cross in a tearful appeal to @FROG 's paternal instincts... AKA the Be my friend thing.

As EVS has kids already, the prodigal son forgot the face of his psuedo-daddy and then decided he was in fact satanic in nature and thus adopted a more Televangelist persona. Liam Swaggart then went on a moral crusade leading him straight into the Anti-sphere with other failures like Vikkiverse, the Comicbook Hut, Peggy Poulter and their groupies...all 5 of them. Together they formed "Soytron" and after team-ups with various no-talents from the mainstream like Mark (Dig on my Nu-Metal hair) Brooks and Donnie "Mateo has his snacks delivered by me" Cates.

And here we are. One very orange, very fried potato who spends his days attacking people around EVS hoping desperately to one day earn a Daddy's love.

the drawing is 5 grand. as a piece of fine art, I think the value is there. the duality of hate/love expressed in a moment of finger-locked bliss. yeah.. I meant to say 7 grand. 😅
the other image, holy cow... I had nothing to do with.
You should put it up on Frog's next auction. He likes when creators get paid.

I don't think the Simple One said a book has to reach 2000 backers to be a success, I think he said that he won't do a sequel to a book unless it reaches 2000 backers. Smiller is the one that said a book has to reach 1000 backers to be a success.

Where can this clip be viewed? Asking for a friend.
Just watch ANY nasser stream.
Here's an example from one of @FROG's streams. It's at the very beginning. Just click play.

I particularly like the music and zoom-in. LOL.

As much as I'd like to point out that Smiller seems to be acknowledging (perhaps inadvertently) that Xenotype was a failure within his standards, I have to say his standards as to backer numbers seems arbitrary and capricious.

I'm pretty sure MOST people are looking at the money. That's what @Mister Dongs is including in his spreadsheets. That's what CG brags about. That's the number they always seem to try get higher every time a book is shilled on a livestream.

Xenotype would be regarded as a modest success today, but for the fact Liam fucked everything up in the printing phase, and then had a meltdown that caused Ody to walk away.

To date in 2022, zero Comicsgate crowdfund campaigns have passed 2000 backers, and only 4 did in 2021 (13 did in 2020). But I consider CG's future at this point being based on its ability to support, attract and retain content creators to carry the banner vs the alternative moreso than how many comics were printed. And that, like it or not, is going to mean a monetary incentive if one wants to include people capable of operating on a professional level. The idea of CG having any sort of appreciable impact on larger culture is, even now, so far from being anywhere near attainable that I don't consider it a success condition.

So far as Liam and Xenotype goes: Liam was the only Comicsgater in 2020 other than Frog to raise more than $100 USD per backer, which speaks to the level he was able get backers to believe in the project. But whether Xenotype was financially successful or not is a matter of controversy; it raised a lot of money but the costs involved, between the shipping from from Australia as well as paying both colorist Scotsman as well as Ody for 200 pages of art make whether it was profitable or not questionable, especially given the disputes involving both.

To me, Ya Boi Zack's (in)ability to pull more than 2000 backers isn't nearly as important as his failure to cross the $47,850 benchmark that separates the pareto point barrier between the "short head" top earners and the much more intense competition in the "long tail" that is the majority of Comicsgaters. It signified the moment Meyer's competition stopped being Tim Lim or the CG Kings and became the likes of the Diaz brothers, Mark Poulton and Slumtown CG.

Don't forget that Liam apparently accepted BerserkGut's "brilliant" idea of using thicker paper for the pages.

I'm sure that ended up driving the expenses way higher than they needed to be.

"which speaks to the level he was able get backers to believe in the project."

Which speaks to the level 'EVS entire crew' was able to get backers to believe in the project, because very few in CG GAF'd about anime/manga (most still don't) and Liam did himself no favors. Without @FROG pushing that book hard, he would have never gotten a fraction of that. I remember a lot of 'Meh' in the chat and Ody being the attraction as the art was good enough to get some converts.

Make no mistake, when Liam cried "HE WAS LIKE A SON TO ME!" what he really meant to say was "HE WAS MY MEAL TICKET!"

Naturally, @FROG played a big role in the numbers Liam got, but you are very correct to note that in the course of highlighting Ethan's ability to sell ice to Eskimos, one should be careful to not to completely write-off what he's promoting as a non-factor.

Consider that while FROG boosted DAMEGANG, his chat was way more lukewarm about the artwork there than what Ody drew. Consequently, the boost for DAMEGANG was way less than for something with better received artwork like Xenotype. FROG boosting usually works, but the results are variable.

Oh absolutely. Nasser is a prime example. EVS got him back to basically square 1, but there was no great leap forward into the '6 figures young lady' category or anything close to it. The light of the Human Sunbeam cannot raise the dead.

My personal (and meaningless) opinion is a lot of Liam's sales were the combo of Ody being a real talent, EVS pushing hard and CG feeling sorry for a good kid stuck headed down a road Stevie Wonder could see coming. I think Liam's presence on his own book was the single greatest detriment to it's sales going further and his follow-ups tell the true tale of Liam's actual ability to move product without a full court press from the top shelf of CG creators and a wunderkind drawing the pages.
