Thank you @Näkki I can't quote you but you are appreciated.

I didn't even think of the exposure to the other animals (who we know are not treated.) I also didn't know about the placenta transplants or that the moms didn't consume it.

I'm honestly surprised they tried to take the baby to the vet giving they have alpaca with visibly deformed under bites, plenty that are severely underweight and likely light on nutrients, etc.

I think they will have other babies showing up because they had a tiktok where a male got into the female's area and they had to wrangle him out. This was last year so there might be some more surprise babies. Last year i think there was like between 10-20? I forget.

Obviously nobody here a-logs... but if you hypothetically dropped the rescue list that would be cool. I didn't know those existed in their area.

Rate me rainbows, but if there's one possible good to come out of this cria fiasco, it'd be Penny putting the tranch on some sort of official radar.

The vet presumably has felt all sorts of blatant red flags from Penny insisting he found a surprise "abandoned" cria in midwinter that's dying of sepsis and that he's giving bottle colostrum and goat's milk to, and that he doesn't have the placenta to harvest plasma or have any knowledge of which one the dam is. Could the vet have put in a call to the relevant state agency?

They do not lick their cria dry. Usually though, you should just bring them in a windproof, insulated shelter and dry it off, and quickly cover it in alpaca baby blankets. (It's a thing, though I'm sure you can make your own.)

I don't want to derail the thread with agricultural sperging, but are you sure about this? I can't think of a single other mammal species (humans apart) where the mother doesn't clean her own baby.

Yooo their GFM for the Lakota is down despite it being the pinned Tweet still?

Penny said he was taking it down when he got ill, and would replace it with a monthly one.
I suspect it will just quietly be dropped if nobody makes a fuss, and then they can keep the balance.
I'd wondered why a completely passive potential income stream needed to be taken down while Penny was sick. (Who cares if you temporarily can't promote it? It's not like it'll blow up if there are no deposits for a bit.)

But your suggestion does make grifter sense.

I'll backup what Nakki said, dams do not clean their cria.

Edit for sources if you want some: this postpartum care guide, I also know it's covered in Andrew Niehaus's camelid medicine book somewhere, can look later when I'm home.

Updated Penny Archive

Kevin said they had colostrum and goat milk for it. So we don't know how long it went without an initial drink but it was drinking from the pics and they said it was keeping temp(im going to be optimistic and assume they used an internal thermometer and not just touch) it would only be able to self-regulate temp if it had colostrum.

Another thing I've seen people use for crashing lambs (usually can't keep temp) is Dextrose but once again I know they wouldn't have that on hand. I don't know about its use in Alpacas or if it's standard for danger zone cria.

I'm not saying they killed this cria with incompetence (I don't know enough to judge) because sometimes farm animals just aren't meant to make it. I'd assume alpaca to be slightly more resilient because they go for "quality over quantity" (sheep and chickens go for quantity). but I can say for sure it was definitely incompetence that started this cycle.

Kevin probably thinks colostrum is a transformer, I place about as much value on his words about farming as I do on my baby niece's takes on astrophysics. Less actually; because she doesn't have a tooled up troon leaning on her not to say anything that makes the family look bad.

Also if they're throwing broad specs down that cria's throat then they're completely destroying it's fragile gut flora, even if they kick the sepsis it's almost certainly going to fail to thrive, and probably die from dehydration/osmosis when it shits out anything they try and feed it in a typhoon of watery dihorrhea

what the fuck kind of farmer can't tell if their animal is alive or dead ffs

When it comes to the tranch's finances and the account it's a bit of a headscratcher, but I'm leaning towards them paying for a lot of stuff on credit, because borrowing is cheap right now, and Penny is exactly the type to stick everything on cards/loans while he waits for his brilliant plan to come to fruition, and none of the lesser troons either knows about it/ won't question the cult leader

I wouldn't be surprised if that's how they're hanging on, and if so they could yet go a while making minimum payments, if they can still fund the mortgage

Penny always bites off more than he can chew. It's like basically a clinical retardation by now. He always has respectively good intentions but has too much pride, refuses expert advice and needs absolute authority so always ends in doing too much and needing grifting to support his ideas. He never thinks things through and just DOES them on a whim and expects it to work out.

Case and point:
  • Joining Army
  • Having a kid and getting married when he wasn't ready
  • Divorcing. Having another kid in the army.
  • Sitting in one room for months while still living as a male doing stock exchanges as a solution to making a new living and, not seeing kids etc.
  • Trooning out as a solution to his miserable life and cope with CSA
  • Dating Kevin and Jen and taking care of them like permanent children (him working at Target was his only arc that basically seemed stable and thought out)
  • Wanting a Trans-haven ranch, spontaneously using mom and dad money to buy ranch for this. Chooses cutest animal to try to make money off of Alpacas before looking into profitability of Alpacas
  • Meeting randos online (Bonnie and Sky) and immediately deciding to buy a bigger house with them for the business instead of...not doing that....
  • Accumulating serfs for the ranch and over-expanding too quickly leading to financial and infrastructure issues (generators, showers, living facilities)
  • Buying sheep and Lambing without knowing you can't separate moms from babies and expect them to take them back.
  • "Off-grid living"
  • "Horticulture"
  • The Earth ship
  • Edit: Recycling Business (thanks @P. Barnes' THOT )
  • Alpaca rescue charity
  • Lakota bi-monthly charity to reach 10 families with 5k cash and donations.
  • The Camelid plasma foundation
All of his half-baked ideas are basically salvages of his last half-baked attempt to fix it. He lives his life like an eternal patch job hoping his next quick fix will solve the last one.

Don’t forget the recycling business. Whatever happened to that?

Or the idiots who donated have actually crowd funded the Pitbull and it's been done under the guise of helping these people.

These are only half interesting but are from one of the yard FtMs posted on Jan 3.

They claim the tranch was down to a dollar and couldn't afford to feed the animals.

Very interesting. I wondered what happened in their native habitats, but the answer seems to be that they die:

Alpacas like to be outside. And being in sunshine helps them get their Vitamin D. But they need protection from the elements here in the US. In South America they do not have structures to protect them. Consequently the smaller and poorer native farmers which comprise 80% of the Alpaca herds experience a 30-40% cria mortality rate.

Another couple of paragraphs worth repeating here:

While you must do some handling after birth, try to keep it to a minimum. The baby needs to imprint on its dam, not a human. Don’t be afraid to do what is necessary postpartum care though. Picking up a baby to clean it off or weighing it will not result in an over socialized Alpaca. Nor will helping it get to the milk bar. Just don’t sit there and cuddle it day after day after day.

Don’t over socialize all Alpacas, but especially MALE crias to avoid aberrant behavior/berserk male syndrome. This is where so many people err during their postpartum care practices. You want them to be approachable but not in your face friendly. There is a lot more to be said about this, but if you ignore this advice you may have to end up euthanizing the Alpaca. Basically don’t allow them to do anything when they are small and cute that you wouldn’t want a full grown 150 lb. Alpaca to do. And don’t overly cuddle them they as are not a companion animal like a dog.

What to do with that troon tampon:

EARS—There’s a funny saying about crias born with floppy/bent ears. “If you tape they’ll be straight in 2 weeks; if you don’t it will take 14 days.”

While this is not a guarantee that most misshapen ears will self correct, the idea is to give them a chance to do so. If they don’t self correct within the first couple of weeks you could try carefully taping a tampon to the ear for a while. Be absolutely sure not to cut off the blood circulation when using vet wrap around it!

Some tips on not wasting that precious hay:

We use NAG Bags (slow feeder netted bags) in a large 100 gallon Rubbermaid watering container to reduce hay waste. It has saved us a lot of money.

Plan a hay room in your shed/barn to store your investment in hay properly.

When it is really cold put down straw. In the shed/barn. The Alpacas will cush during cold weather to maintain warmer temps. Straw generally is cheaper than your hay. Most feed stores supply it.

Things we've never heard of them doing (and remember they hired a tent and threw a party for shearing.

We check the following each month during Herd Health:
  • Weigh monthly. Most mature Alpacas will usually be between 125-175 lbs. Crias should gain at least .25 lbs and .50 lbs per day. Weigh them daily at first.
  • Eyes for clarity, cataracts, damage, and drainage
  • Eyelids (conjunctiva) using the FAMACHA Scale. This is a good way to observe anemia issues which can be related to either parasites or lack of iron.( See: https://web.uri.edu/sheepngoat/files/FAMACHA-Scoring_Final2.pdf for in depth information.)
  • Ears for smell, appearance or ticks (see below.) Smells and/or discharge is indicative of an ear infection. Get a vet involved immediately. Do not treat with things like hydrogen peroxide. The Alpaca ear canal is L-shaped and cannot drain liquids as easily as a human ear. Very tiny amounts of Ivomec to prevent ear tick infestations is an exception to this advice.
  • Teeth grow all of an Alpaca’s lifetime. Front teeth are inspected for damage, growth patterns and deformities. In rare occurrences the front teeth might need to be trimmed. A Dremel Rotary tool or Tooth o Matic device can be used to this end. The teeth should normally align at the front of the upper dental pad.
  • Feel along the jaw line where their molars are for swollen or tender spots. Get a vet involved if problems are found. Abcesses are always possible.
  • Body score monthly with your hand just behind thewithers. We use a 9 point scale with 1 = emaciated, 5 = perfect, and 9 = obese. Some Alpacas carry their weight lower so always use in combination with a scale. (While we don’t have a picture of the 9 point scale, an adjustment can be made for the numbers of this 5-point scale found at: http://islandalpaca.com/alpaca_health_care.php#Body_Scoring)
  • Check their fleece for parasite issues or skin infections.
  • Check underneath the tail for both males and females for signs of drainage, damage or diarrhea.
  • Trim toenails monthly. Not all may need it but don’t skip looking at them. White toenails usually grow faster.
  • If you suspect any illnesses at all be sure to taken their temperature rectally with a digital thermometer. Test the thermometer to ensure that it is working properly. Get a vet involved if appropriate.
  • If you have deer nearby, and you are in an affected area (definitely found in Texas), monthly (28-30-32 days) shots (given subQ )of Ivermectin (or generic) kill extant Meningial worms before the infect the brain. Don’t miss/delay your shots. It’s the cheapest insurance you will ever purchase!
  • We give liquid probiotics monthly as the final step.

Keep a written record of your breedings. We’ve seen it on marker boards at other ranches. We use a written form. It’s sharable if you want it.

Time breedings so that 30-60 days of reasonable temps are before and after the expected delivery dates. This translates into a fairly narrow seasonal window for breeders in our area—about 2 months in the spring and fall.

Spring babies tend to be stronger and have less problems, at least that is what we have been told by an experienced veterinarian.

Practically speaking there are two, no three ways of breeding Alpacas:
  1. Haltered Breeding
  2. Pasture Breeding
  3. Oops Breeding

Oops Breeding

Leaving a gate unlatched between males and females is the best way for this type of breeding Alpacas. Obviously we are stating this method in jest. It has severe negative issues especially if you have sons breeding moms and sisters. Using Estrumate to make the females cycle and abort their fertilized eggs is the only sure solution to this problem. But that may be a difficult and expensive solution for you. So please, always double latch those gates! If you have contractors on your property doing work a serious emphasis for pen security should be a requirement.

Another Oops Breeding takes place when you leave a male cria with their dam past 8 months. Be sure to start weaning your males from their dams no later than 8 months, preferably earlier.
