So why did it take long for the mage tower to "come back"?

"REEEEEEEEE why does game challenge me REEEEEEEEE"

(To be completely fair, the above soy golem hasn't been on WoW for like 5 years and there's been a number of Blizz Devs who have been absolutely loving Elden Ring. But they're by far a minority nowadays. Back in the day, Blizzard devs would play Samurai Shodown against each other. I can't imagine the hyperventilating this asshole would devolve into were he subjected to 'forced multiplayer.')

One of the first thing he's asking about is how to turn off multiplayer.
This explains a lot about WoW in the past years.
by default, though, it's pretty much off anyways? All you have is the messages, and those are usually informative. The rest is npc invasions.
Why did he re-keybind before even trying the tutorial...? Surely you could have tried the controls before you ditched them? For a controller they're largely pretty intuitive - left trigger is left hand, right trigger is right hand, the plus-shaped views are swapped by pressing the plus directions appropriately...
Can't really comment on the safe spot thing without context, but once you know the Souls habits, it's hard for the game to really surprise you because you see it coming.

It means his stupid ass was summoning a bunch of help for all of the things he couldn't deal with, which is also how you trigger invasions. Invaders are at a massive disadvantage, but if you're prone to throwing a fit and chucking the control when it happens, well, there you go. (There is also a big, obvious "offline" option.)

Besides the obvious faggotry on display, I also think we're in the desperation phase of the expansions' cycle. Shadowlands bombed as hard, if not harder, than WoD. They probably expected a big turnout for 9.2, lots of players coming back (the "if we make it they will come" mentality that has served them so well in the past), so when basically nobody gave a shit about the patch that must have been a shock I think.
Now they're gonna give the proles what they've been clamoring for. People have been whining on the forums about the mage tower for a while, so here it is. We're probably going to see some other long-requested little customization things, transmogs, heritage armor/weapons and some such.
Obviously this is just some surface level shit. I fully expect them to believe that Shadowlands bombed exclusively because a bunch of toxic streamers decided to shit on it for views, it couldn't be te game! It couldn't be the systems! We made it, it must be good!
So now they're going to make a token show of contrition, just to return to their smug "we know better than to listen to feedback" selves the moment next expac shows even a modicum of success preorder-wise.

Was 9.2 a dud? I mean, I know storywise it was a complete turd, but just curious if there was no real spike with people bouncing back to it.

Who knew that talking about 'amazing water' wouldn't bring back the salad days, lol.

They relented on covenant restrictions, so you can swap freely now, but everything else is still fucked. Gearing, for instance, is still a RNGfest even with the inclusion of the vault.

A friend of mine tried to convince me to resub for 9.2, he was all like "there's always a lull in players between patches, youtubers are just whining for views, it ain't that bad". I was on discord with him yesterday night, not only he took him something like 90 minutes (during prime time, mind you) to find a tank to run a key, he hasn't dropped a usefeul piece of gear in a month, with a fully unlocked vault each week.

Beyond that it just feels like... nobody is even talking about the patch. There's Baldular, still beating the dead horse, everyone else has just moved on to greener pastures and hasn't looked back since.

The original WoW developers played MMOs. The current WoW devs have only ever played the mini-game called raiding within MMOs, but not really engaged with any of the core MMO features.

I'm honestly so fucking tired of the Raid-centric endgame. I don't like raiding, I never did, the last time I full-time raided was ICC. The rest I was either getting boosted or some friend dragged me along where I could basically sit back and do nothing.

In every Expansion I felt like there was something to do, even in god damn WoD or BFA I had at least some motivation to gather these stupid crystals or do something. But now you have like 5 fucking things to collect, you need that honour, you need this thing from Thorghast, you need anima you need gear you need this and that. it's all just a chore and a timesink. Not to forget the time-gating. "Oh this research is going to take 5 days teehee" don't give me that garbage.

I just want to come home in the evening and play something fun, not start a second job. If I wanted that I'd get a side hustle.

I've gone at length before about my personal history with the raiding side of the game, but I was pretty similar. Shortly after I started, my friend got me into his guild that had ICC on farm, raided the last few months of the expansion. Cata caused a lot to drop out, to the point the guild had to downsize to 10-man, and I was forced to the sidelines until the roster was so dead that they needed a warm body. Guild finally fell apart, I hopped servers to a new one, raided for a little bit in Mists, then that guild also fell apart. From then until I finally quit at the start of BfA, it was solely pugs and LFR for me, mostly pugs when the Group Finder was added. I just couldn't be assed to find another guild again; not only did I not want to have my schedule revolve around a video game, I didn't want to watch yet another guild collapse around me.

And really, outside of raiding, there wasn't much else to do. Everything else felt like it was really just funneling you back into raiding, there wasn't much outside of it. Professions, reputations, dungeons, mythic+, dailies, world quests...so many things that felt like their only real purpose was to grind more so you could raid more. About the only system I could think of that wasn't related to raiding in some way was fucking pet battles, which was basically its own game altogether.

Destiny 2 might have a slightly annoying power grind, but it's nowhere near as bad as WoW was when I still played. It's not really an apples-to-apples comparison, I know, but I can get a hell of a lot more gameplay in an hour of D2 than I ever could have in WoW. I have zero desire to go back to Azeroth for any reason, though I'll gladly continue to watch the story plummet off a cliff.

Never played WoW but I would like to know is this game worth trying out in 2022?
Classic SoM with its increased rates might be fun. TBC Classic is full of bots and is dead. Retail is... How do I put it... Retail has one of the worst new player experiences of any MMO currently on the market. You'll be dumped into a story-heavy expansion (BfA) without any context and will likely be pushed by the game's systems into another story-heavy expansion (Shadowlands) before you even finish BfA's story due to leveling. And that's not even getting into the fact that Shadowlands, despite being current, has already had some of its story outright removed from the game.

If you care about story, go play FFXIV or SWTOR. If you want an MMO to mindlessly grind, play Runescape. If you want a comfy fantasy setting without a ton of story but a lot of background lore, go play ESO (assuming you can handle bad combat).

Classic SoM is Season of Mastery right? Is that what the Classic servers are like at the moment or is it something separate?

SoM is WoW classic with increased drop and xp rates to make getting to endgame faster. Enemies are a little tougher and raid bosses are released in their un-nerfed form (most bosses in original classic were released with their final nerfs from back in the day).

It's built on a sort of seasonal model so once the season ends, the servers will be wiped and everyone will start out back at the beginning.

Technically SoM is separate from WoW classic but classic is so dead at this point that if you want a playable 'classic' experience, you should just play SoM because you probably won't be able to find parties or guilds in regular classic. That or just go find an active vanilla pserver.

That does sound somewhat attractive. On the subject of private servers, are there ones for each expansion?

Usually yeah. You'll have to google around because I haven't really followed that scene in like a decade. Mists of Pandaria seems really popular right now probably due to zoomer nostalgia although vanilla pservers are always running. Usually these aren't "pure" because they implement a lot of QoL stuff and there's often p2w functionality, but they're not bad if you just wanna step in and experience WoW at a certain point in its history.

Mage tower is back, you say? Hm. I guess it'd depend on whether it requires level 60 to run or not--any word on that? Cuz I am not buying Chapter 2 of Steve Danuser's Corpse Waifu Wankfest (aka Shadowlands.) I have been feeling oddly nostalgic for WoW aesthetics and whatnot lately, and if MT could be done regardless of level, well...I might be willing to drop some dough Blizzard's way for a month or two of playtime...
