Disaster Teenage boy, 14, dies after plunging from 400ft drop tower ride at Orlando's ICON Park [Video] - Teen was taken to hospital but died from his injuries, Orange County police said.

Archived video of the fall referenced in the article (but not included), fetched from YouTube (likely to be deleted soon). NSFL. Don't watch if you don't want to see someone splatter at the 3:40 timestamp:

A teenager has died after falling from a drop ride at a theme park in Orlando, Florida

The 14-year-old fell from the plunging ride - the world's tallest free-standing drop tower - at ICON park, just after 11pm on Thursday.

The teen, who has not yet been identified, was taken to hospital but succumbed to his injuries, Orange County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.

Terrifying footage captured the horrific accident and the screams of witnesses as the boy fell from the ride, which rotates around a tower as it rises in the air before plunging to the ground at 75 miles per hour.

The ride, the Orlando Free Fall, opened in December 2021, stands at 430ft tall and can accommodate up to 30 people.

The vehicle rotates around a central tower as it rises. After it reaches the top, riders tilt forward and face the ground briefly before free-falling at approximately 75 miles per hour.

It was not immediately clear how the teenager became free from the ride's seat belt or how many people were on the tower at the time.

ICON Park on International Drive has not yet commented on the tragedy. Police have opened an investigation into the incident.

The teen, who has not yet been identified, was taken to hospital but succumbed to his injuries, Orange County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.

It comes less than two years after a park employee died after falling 200 feet from the Orlando StarFlyer attraction.

The 21-year-old employee was performing a safety check about halfway up the 450-foot-tall ride when he plummeted to his death just before 8am on September 14, the Orange County Sheriff's Office stated.

The worker struck a platform below the ride at ICON Park on International Drive in Orlando and went into cardiac arrest, according to first responders who were called to the scene.

The man was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead from his injuries.

The swing ride opened to the public in 2018. According to the description on the attraction's official site, StarFlyer has no age limit and no weight limit, and the minimum height required to go on the ride is just 44 inches.

The ride is made up of 24 double seats that travel up and down and around the giant tower for 3-4 minutes.

At the time of the fall, the worker was about halfway up the 450-foot-high ride, billed at the world's tallest swing ride

The line about the ride tilting forward at the very top is interesting. Maybe this is where the mechanism broke under his weight? He slid right under the harness as the ride began to slow down after the drop, there was no chance of him holding on.

We all die. Ride a rollercoaster, fag.
We all die, so just place your life into the hands of pothead carnies and a company that's definitely cutting costs to keep the rides as profitable as possible. I'd rather do something where, if I go splat, it's 100% on me, like mountain climbing.

That's fucking horrifying, looks like the restraint separated from the bottom and then lifted and he had no idea what was going on till he hit the ground.

I feel sorry for him and his family.

One question I want to ask is what caused this was it lack of maintenance? a lot of these parks just shut down during covid and rides like this are complex machines and normally get regular servicing that would catch things likely to fail before they do fail and if they are in a rush to get the park back into action they might skip some checks and it lead upto this tragic accident.

Edit -
Looking at it this might have failed before the drop, or on the accent - but I'm thinking of basic safety requirements here - safety restraints that work by hydrolics are meant to have a safety contact trigger fire no fire system (there is a name for this for rides but I'm not sure about it but I've got a working knowledge of hydrolics not park systems) and if a safety system fails they are designed to blow off pressure slowly and return to a resting position if that didn't fail that becomes a mechanical failure like a Pin giving way etc, but those things are suposed to have a 10x1 failure loading under any circumstance.
It seemed loose at the beginning of the video, it may have been due to his size but its definitely not as far down as the others on the ride. It seemed to 'slip' enough when the ride began decelerating to eject him out; however after that, when you next see the restraint it is fully down.

Don't the restraints operate via some sort of ratchet mechanism? so the restraints can't be lifted up without disengaging the ratchet. Its been forever since I've been on a rollercoaster but when restraints were unlocked they lifted up by themselves. Which makes me think the lock may not have failed?

My guess is that the kid held the restraint down making it appear more secure than it was but there was enough play for him to be thrown out and/or a tooth broke. His size and how the restraint is set around that may also have been a minor factor.
Edit: Watched the beginning again and it seems like the restraint is locked, he moves his arms about so obv not holding it. Also looks like he might have pushed against it and it didn't move.

Surely theres got to be at least one gypsy engineer on KF that can enlighten us

Here's a photo of the seating system, it's interesting to me there's no nylon crotch strap.

Most if not all rides I've been on like this where your feet dangle have the ratcheting shoulder system, but also a seatbelt style click in nylon strap that holds the overhead system to the bottom of the ride between the riders legs. So even in the event of the shoulder system failing there's still something there.

The guy sitting next to him was probably a friend/family member, looks shaken.

Harness likely wasn't all that secure to begin with, chubs clearly slipped right out from under it. Would be surprised if the ride didn't have a weight/size limit to prevent this sort of thing and the teenager operating the ride just failed to do his job.

EDIT: Looks like no outright weight limit, but a general must fit in the seat rule.

He looks pretty fucking fat for a 14 year old. I bet he was too big for the ride and rather than admit it and face the embarrassment he held the harness down and pretended like it was locked, then he couldn't hold it down over the G-force of the descent. "Health at every size" claims another victim.

Either way, you'd think these rides just wouldn't run at all unless all the harnesses and locks are secured.
Well they tend to look fatter when you spread them out at an inch thick.

I thing I heard someone scream "OH MY GOD" the kid's name and then "NO!" like they were family just watching him die. It's heartbreaking.

I’ve seen people that are too big to ride on rides. Honestly he was probably too big for this ride too which is unfortunate but what can we do? Truly a horrifying death and I feel bad for everyone.

In the beginning of the vid you can see his ( black guy on the very left, in side profile ) restraint is simply not down as much as the other attendees. Most likely because his stomach got in the way. You can see it going down to their legs, while it is up quite a bit for him.

While that seemed tight enough to keep him secured sitting, he most likely just slipped right through it as the fat moved out of the way given the forces. So the restraint didn't really fail in that sense. I wonder why there's no connecting strap / bar between the legs tho

The official site for the Orlando Free Fall ride won’t load for some mysterious reason, but I did find some rough stats from another source but it’s paywalled and I’m a retard.

Weight doesn’t seem to be mentioned just minimum height, not maximum.
I assume it’s one of those rides where as long as someone can be safely secured into the seat they can ride.

That would have to be a big 14 year old.

Granted it's only half a minute into the event. But the response of the park people is kind of disturbing.

We have supervisor dude with a radio who goes and stands over the victim looking at him and delivering what professionals term "the stare of life". It's where the cop can assess a full set of vitals and determine death in any situation without bending down or examining the victim.

We have the teenybopper operators hanging around the rail bullshitting instead of getting everybody else off the ride and away from the victim. They seem oblivious to any concern other than this might require them to work overtime.

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed that. There's a guy begging to get away from the splattered body and the attendants just casually stroll over and are like "Uh, you sure you checked the seatbelt?"

Bizarre, Marcel Vos just recently made a video about this kind of ride in Roller Coaster Tycoon and how to make it one of the best rides in the game:

If only the park made it like in the video, just spin around at ground level and everyone gets off. They could’ve been raking in money and avoided all this.
