President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

Hot take: even if U.S. & NATO troops landed in Ukraine to push Russian forces back, Putin still wouldn't hit the nuke button.

They can play the same "green men" scenario and admit to nothing. The real advantage is high tech gear (NV and thermals), more hands-on time with training. The problem is that like in most wars like this, the top ways to die is an artillery strike/bombs, not getting shot (as supported by stats) The disadvantage for Western troops would be realization that life is cheap and no one is going to medevac them to state of art hospital and they'll just have to bleed out and die in some ditch. It's going to be them or their comrades.

In the ole USSR the "button" was actually a procedure of three men acting to launch the strike, and at least two people who will be actually launching anything on site. There were some close calls, when false alarms almost got us into nuke exchange but was narrowly averted. With Shoigu and Gerasimov missing, may be crazy Vlad has collected all the three buttons to rule them all.

"I'm against GLOBOHOMO so I will fully support Russia! The very same Russia that conscripts men into an army that forces men to undergo ass-rape!"

... it's a "rite of passage"

If you think that Russian army is bad, Russian Orthodox church completely dwarfs all that. Stalin himself at one time studied in a seminary and established the fusion of ChK/KGB/FSB with church that's going to this day. Recruiting homos and pedos into the church wasn't just helpful, it was the only way to get in, as all churches under USSR were technically under KGB that made decisions with promotions and intel gathering. The more skeletons you had in your closet, the better, plus it served well to discredit religious influence internally. Even if it wasn't in the open, whatever was left of parishes, people could add 1+1 when their priests seem to do "things" but it never went any further in public. Entire church leadership today are the priests who came from the USSR times, (i.e. KGB agents and CIs) along with the debauchery kept on down low in their circles.

Back to the Tsar times, St. Pete's, homosexuality, pedophilia and troonery was absolutely normalized, but never spoken out loud. Poor students, country folks could earn day's work of unloading carts in 5 min of just ("relax your anus") There were well known streets, where you'd stroll to pick up "aunts", i.e. men dressed as women. Bath houses with boys and men "for assistance"

Russia has never been a homophobic country, buttsex, animal sex, snohachestvo (having sex with wives of your sons) was probably even greater due to difference in wealth. There is only a facade of being based.

btw, by Russian prison rules it's not homo to get a blow job from a man or to fuck prison "bitch" in ass. So it's not about homosexuality, it's about where you are on the power totem pole.

That's kind of the end result when you build your masculine culture around the twisted sense of domination Russians seem to have with the result of that being that the purest way of dominating another man is to put your dick in his ass. Maybe Russia does have a claim to being the Third Rome after all knowing the complex Romans could have towards buttfucking.

Rus began by slavs inviting some burly man from abroad to rule them, it makes sense

We still have M2 Browning heavy machine guns from the 40s in the US Army
It's a decent machine gun
1940's? They've found one in inventory with a serial number in the 100's. That dates it to the 1930's.

Here, a countryball that sums up the current situation.

The M2 is directly equivalent to the DShK which the Russians still use, but I don't give them a hard time about that since like the M2 it's still a decent, reliable machine gun. The Maxim is more like the Browning M1917 which was already phased out after Korea.

There's nothing mechanically wrong with Maxim guns though - they're just fucking heavy, which based on that picture it's mounted on a vehicle so its moot anyway.

Houthi rebels just bombed Jeddah next to the F1 track, most likely the race will be cancelled now
Why is this related? Because Saudi and UAE is trying to strong arm US by playing it close with China. And then this happened....
Yeah, there's no way in hell the American alphabet agencies doesn't have a hand in this. Saudi's Intelligence is shit, they depend on the US for lots of things, including defense

Is it wrong I can't exactly feel bad for the Saudis? Only an idiot knows you don't openly snub the USA like they did.

“The brigade commander was killed by his own troops, we believe, as a consequence of the scale of losses that have been taken by his brigade,” one official said. “We believe that he was killed by his own troops deliberately. We believe that he was run over by his own troops.”
Fucking weirdo Russians can't even frag officers normally.
The Western official also confirmed Ukrainian reports that a lieutenant general commanding the 49th Combined Arms Army had died in the fighting, making him the seventh Russian general to be killed in combat since the invasion began.
It's genuinely hard to explain how catastrophically you have to be fucking up to get 7 fucking generals killed by the enemy in the space of just a few weeks. For comparison the US lost 1 in Afghanistan and that wasn't even to real enemy forces but was an insider attack by an ANA soldier.

How far back we have to go to find US general who got killed in combat?
American Civil War?

Think one might have gotten fragged in Vietnam. One and two stars need to get pretty damn close to the battlefield, especially ones in charge of air cav formations. But don't worry, plenty got fragged in WW2. A lieutenant general got gibbed by Japanese artillery on Okinawa, two major generals got shot by enemy ground forces in 1945, one in the Philippines, one Germany, one in the USAAF might have gotten shot down by Japanese AA somewhere off Wake in 1942, and a few brigadiers who were personally scouting the lines got shot, and add in some friendly fire incidents for a total of 11 KiA generals.

Of course, that doesn't compare to the number who died in plane crashes. Number 1 killer of US flag officers in WW2 right there.
