IIRC, you’re supposed to put your hazards on so the cop knows you’re looking for a good place to pull over. My guess is Fat Rick pretended he didn’t see the officer until he pulled over and even then acted passive aggressively.

No such thing, it's a legal fund members have to apply for, sign away attorney-client privilege, turn over all documentation, give the SFWA a lien on potential money awarded, and the board of directors have to greenlight it.
Curiously I went through the SFWA latest 990 form available on the IRS site (for 2019) and there's no mention of a loan, but a grant. It calls it a "GRANT TO REFUND LEGAL EXPENSES OF SF&F WRITERS", "...IS FOR LEGAL EXPENSES INCURRED".
Contrary to their website (read for details on criteria to apply and conditions) that has only ever described it as being used to loan for future legal expenses. Maybe they first loan, then cancel the debt of losers like Pat with a grant, at least partly.
Much has been said about Pat being on the hook for Quasi's money even if SFWA bankrolled the action, based on this:
But that's not necessarily true IMO, Quasi is owed attorney's fees, not damages. Could still be the case that SFWA wouldn't cover it but that depends on the contract between them.
They had $1.5M in stocks as of 2019 btw.

Whatever happens, I doubt anything will come of it. The members are probably too cucked to take a stand and it's pennies to the IRS. In some ancient legal systems it was prohibited to pay money to a lawyer for representation so they would often instead be offered big "loans" that everyone knew would not be repaid. Smells like a similar scam here.
