Russo-Japanese war comes to mind, but Japan was barely a country back then and the Russian loss, though humiliating and contributing to the revolution later, was nowhere near as devastating in terms of economic damage.

It was pretty bad, they also lost port aurthur, which was probably the best warm water port they had. Keep in though, Russia's tolerance for casualties isn't as high now. While it's certainly higher than the west's, it's nowhere near what it was in the tsarist and soviet days.

A few days ago the story was Amy Schumer (I think) suggested it. A live cross or pre-recorded video. Where Hollywood can use their self-importance and ego to bring attention to the conflict. Virtue signal how good they are. Which got laughed out of the room. With people noting, "I think he has better things to do, such as running a war."

People mocking it like, "Imagine being the type of person who finds out about the Ukraine war from watching the Oscars?"

So now I guess the progressive merry go round of being unable to say no to a dumb idea if it seems to be on cause has brought this up again.

It's getting so that I want Russia to win just to stick it to these Hollywood fuckers. The problem with gold is that outside of its industrial value, its only worth as much as what people are willing to trade for it. If very few people are willing to do business with you and the only people who are, have limited means to facilitate the exchange of goods(Interconnected roads, railways, ect.) then it doesn't really matter how much gold you have. Its only worth what you can get for it.

In World In Conflict, if the enemy's troops suddenly stopped attacking or pulled back, it was usually a sign that a tactical nuke was coming and you needed to run.

It's still not certain that the Ukrainians are winning. I don't mean this in a "I'm sorry but did Putin already lose?" way. More like a "fog of war makes it hard to tell if you're winning" way.

The Russians apparently have had a narrative shift where their goal is now to secure the Russian speaking territories and that Kiev was just a distraction or feint to keep the Ukrainians busy. Of course that would be a rather expensive distraction. They have not pulled their forces away from Kiev either, so it seems they're still keeping the city on the table so far. Ukraine has also retaken territory, but not much, and doubtful anyone can say if it can make up for any territory they've lost today or the nearest days
