I wouldn't worry about it too much. It depended on your age when you were exposed to him. A lot of people saw what he was from the jump, but an awful lot of them took and take him seriously. We all like stupid shit when we're teenagers that proves to be embarrassing later. Don't beat yourself up. At his peak, he was funny, and he didn't galvanize young conservative voters for no reason.

If he does have anything (assuming he's not making it all up) he has a post-viral syndrome rather than brain damage from hypoxia. It's an overly trendy idea right now because of covid, but post-infection syndromes do exist and have been recognized for a long time (here is a paper from 1988 for example)
