Turning Red thread

Jesus Christ what is it’s about this movie that had turned this into a Twitter thread, It’s just a silly children’s film about a girl turning into a tiny red panda, it’s not like it’s a Cambodian genocide, the vitriol this harmless and fairly sweet children’s film has caused from all over Twitter and even here is insane. Sure the characters may look a but weird with their bean mouth look, but I actually kind of enjoy the style, Luca used this look to perfection and was a beautiful film with its scenery and unique cartoony look. It may not work here as well but I still think it’s a unique and interesting art style for a Pixar film.

So many Pixar films have a beautiful but ‘Samey’ look to them now since their obsession with sequels, like Toy Story 4 looks like an updated version of the previous films but with beautiful new photorealistic textures and lighting. This new changup of style is a breath of clean air and I hope they try more stuff like this in the future. It’s not worth getting this pissed at Jesus people.

I kinda wish they kept the weird fucking looking humans from the first 2 toy storys for all toy story films. 3 and 4 have completely different looking people , 3 is more normal looking but still clearly in the same style and 4 is uhh fuck how the hell do I describe it shits like 3 but closer to cryptoland than toy story

The last 2 pixar films have looked like the kinda shit style some ads like the grubhub ads have but with a budget and never stops being funny to me when people get pissed at me comparing the 2. In the span of time since turning red came out it feels like online talk of the movie has shifted from "haha funny grubhub" to "NOOOO DON'T SAY IT LOOKS LIKE GRUBHUB NOOO WHY ARE YOU MAD AT IT IT LOOKS FINE WHY DO YOU HATE IT IT"S A MOVIEFORKIDS ABOUTPUBERTY!!!"

Like Fucking hell, ridiculous online shit aside it's clear the movies literally just a fucking movie about a wacky kid that ends up discovering her family has the ability to turn into red pandas when they feel strong emotions similar to how luca is about some fishmen that find out they become normal humans when they aren't wet.

Is this trend of thing being able to also become other thing when specific quotas are met going to continue? Like with or without the weird grubhub looking humans present in both films this does feel like the start of something that's going to be a factor for maybe the next few projects or so.

EDIT: Speaking of style degradation type shit similar to toy story's humans this is slightly off-topic but I saw a trailer ad pop up a few days ago for another puss in boots shrek spinoff movie and the humans in that movie aren't in the same exaggerated realism kinda style as the other films leaning more into "generic cartoon cgi human" territory. I'm too lazy to go looking it up and watch the thing again at the moment but I'm pretty sure thats what I witnessed. It's actually interesting how shrek's artstyle stayed the same throughout all 4 movies despite there being clear improvements in the animation and some technical details while toy story had that for the first 2 movies before straying from that path in the 3rd and 4th for literally everything but the toy characters who stayed the same save for bo peep getting that modern didney treatment in 4 despite being like a porcelain figurine in the other movies thats clothes were literally part of her "flesh" more or less.

There actually is a good amount of style differences between Pixar films depending on who the director is.

Yeah but this art style has gotten people so wound up for some reason, it’s like people aren’t willing to accept this new cartoony look for one their films which makes it a terrible movie, It’s Disney they can do whatever they like for their animated films, no one is forcing you to watch it, if you hate the style and think it’s a bad film just ignore it and find better things to do. Simple.

I mean, people are allowed to voice their displeasure about something online. And animation is a visual medium so obviously the look of an animated film will be a big part of the criticism. If anything it’s a shitty thing to dismiss people with “big corporations can do whatever they want, literally do anything else”. Especially considering this is a site all about documenting and observing shit.

As for the arguments; it seems people find the artstyle too reminiscent of the post 2010 thin line animation, just 3D. The concern is that Pixar, a prominent and well loved animation studio, is homogenizing itself to fit current animation trends, i.e. the opposite of a breath of fresh air. There’s also people who found it plain ugly but that’s to subjective to truly be discussed.

It’s not even the most prominent discourse for animated films.

This is a fucking stalking site retard.

What is with you people and insisting your opposition is mad about everything? It's a stupid art style and they made a stupid movie with it. Some of us grew up on Glen Keane and know what real animation looks like. I'm sorry your mom spent her best years drinking instead of having you so you had to miss out on the fun but the movies are still available on your Disney+ subscription, take your dick out of your hand and watch some classics. Then you can come back and tell me how wrong you were.

It’s just an art style, it isn’t the absolute most important part of the film, a good script can save a film with and visuals, great visuals cannot save a bad script, story and characters. The internet have focused on this one aspect and ramped it up out of proportion without even considering the films script, which is honestly a very charming and funny story that pulls off thsi bizarre premise extremely well.

Yeah for lolcows, not to obsessively get mad at children’s films for an art style they don’t like, grow up.

Haha very funny, call my mom an alcoholic, and no I’m not being ignorant of the classics, I grew up on the classic era of Disney animation, I’ve seen about 80% of all major Disney animated film goings back to Snow White from 1937, do dont accuse me being ignorant of the classics just because I happen to like this modern art style. You sound like your a typical nostalgia blind animation purist who wants all Disney films to go back to 2D Renaissance era. Open yourself up to new styles, Pixar are simply trying something different and if it’s not to your tastes who cares. You have a mountain of other films and Pixar will continue to make beautiful films throughout yours and mines lifetime, it’s not a big deal.

:agree:

It's a story about a chink kid living in Canada who got her period. This does not compare with timeless fairy tales and children's classics such as Beauty and the Beast and Peter Pan. It's crap for sinophiles, pedophiles, and all those who hate culture but love consooming.

People can say whatever they want on the internet. Lol calm down.

This is a movie that takes place in 2002 yet they barely touched on it, besides the whole 4 Town/Backstreet Boys and Tamagachis.

No mention of the war in Afghanistan, the original Xbox and PS2(missed console war opportunity there), no mention of the hit cop show The Shield, no mention of Pokemon, Yu Gi Oh, Digimon, Transformers( I grew up watching Armada), Sailor freaking moon.

The late 90s to 2000s was the beginning of the internet age and this movie was fucking squandered on telling a story about puberty.
I wonder how much of the audience missed that it was supposed to be 2002 until they state the year towards the end. I half-suspect they were trying to lob an easy "period piece" joke to journalists. It is the Canada of years, where everything is different if you pay attention but not different enough to matter that much. Humanizing Canadians is among the movie's other crimes.

Holy shit man if Disney actually did censor this movie like people have been saying, that's 1. an example of justified censoring and 2. really fucking gross to think about.
Ha ha, imagine you make a movie and Disney sends it back and asks you to tone down the Jewishness.

Again, it is a visual medium, where visuals play a big part in the story telling; hell yes it is the most important part of the film. I’m so tired of hacks justifying half assed art with “Oh the writing will make up for”; it’s not a crime to have both. It’s really weird how defensive you’re getting over this movie and trying to convince everyone it’s so great.
You sound like your a typical nostalgia blind animation purist who wants all Disney films to go back to 2D Renaissance era.
Why do you make this sound like a bad thing? A return to 2D animated films would genuinely be bigger change of pace than what most studios are doing right now.

Animation sperging is fun and all, but I Just have to point out that it's a small blessing(?) the family's Chinese, because if they were Japanese, you would've gotten a taste of Japanese culture in which when the daughter(s) get her first period, the entire family has to eat sekihan (red beans and rice) together in celebration. Mei freaking the fuck out over her red panda form (her period) and then her mom trying to calmly explain things to her is something Chinese girls go through, because they keep things hush-hush about menstruation until the day it happens, and all the men in the household is not supposed to be told about it. Since it's widely believed this movie is just the director retelling her own adolescence as a Chinese-Canadian, wonder if there's some slight disdain toward her own mother for not telling her about periods before it happened. Never mind that even in the West, there's girls who aren't told about it in time, making it a traumatizing moment to many girls.

And I'm trying to confirm how true this is, but apparently in Canada, it's supposed to be tradition for the girl to abstain from eating berries the first year of her period. She can collect and preserve them to eat a year later, though.

A tldr for this post.

I don't know, that's kind of nice. In my family when the girls get their first period they only get bread.
