The Final Fantasy Thread

I'd make a case that FFX is the last "good" FF game though it's got some major flaws to it and the story is such that it could have used a couple of addition drafts to refine it and make the themes more explicit (since it's got some decent ideas even if it's buried under a ton of garbage that distract from it as far as how they deal with the Godzilla rip-off Sin).

Also, if we can't get the pixel remasters on Switch, can we at least get a compilation of the Advance games for 1-6 on Switch?
I remember my brother telling me when it came out, and he was playing it at the time, "Yeah, it's a typical Final Fantasy game. It's pretty good. (meaning flawed but still pretty fun).

Almost all FFs are pretty conclusive, there are no hooks for sequels or anything. Its not impossible to make a sequel out of them but its preferable if its kept well enough alone. Which is why I dont want a FF 6 sequel where they bring magic back or something because that would take away a lot from the original's finale and there is no way the new villain could ever compare to Kefka.

FF is meant to be an anthology ultimately, so each tale solves all its character arcs so forcing more out of them feels like you'd get the FF equivalent of a disney sequel. A story that forces characters to either having to learn the same lessons as before or/and their children gotta learn the same lesson as their parents...to the point must wonder whats the point, you have seen this story already.
I'd have agreed before they stopped making good FFs. I'm desperate enough for a playable JRPG that if I need to take a mediocre sequel to get one, I'll do it. It's a pretty dead genre outside of the action variety.

There's Cold Steel 1-4, Trails in the Sky 1-3, Trails of Zero 1 and 2, and they're putting out a new series.

all of these have some form of turn based combat.

I've been considering that series but it looks really "generic anime", kinda hard to explain... Like NIS games in general, for example. Has a very budget look too.

It iscalso intimidatingly dense. Too many games, and AFAIK they're all connected. I'm thinking about it though.

It's also garbage storytelling. Every villain is excused of their actions because of sad backstory and/or possession (mind, control, demons, curses).

Isnt that nearly every villain nowadays period? Because we just cant have some people that just enjoy being evil anymore

Final fantasy origin is a good 7/10. Ps3 era graphics, crashed on me multiple times. And I wasn’t playing on PC, I was playing on Xbox one.

Fun gameplay though, good soundtrack, and hilarious cheesy dialogue. I really can’t complain, I got what I wanted.

I checked this and the game has its flaws, but it is by no means a bad game as someone who finished it. It’s a solid 6 or 7.

Did we even play the same game?

They’re probably salty because Sarah won’t touched them unless they’ve Jack

Well, it's official: The final battle in Kirby: Forgotten Land makes significantly more sense than anything in Final Fantasy VII: Remake and was also more emotional.

the shit I took this morning was more emotional than anything in FFVII Remake

The best way I can explain it is that if you want a generic JRPG taken to its mastercraft level, that's your series.

They're really good.

I remember thinking the final boss would be Sephiroth showing up in the highway and summoning or becoming Jenova Birth. I thought that would be a good change to how confusing “him” just being Jenova could be and how weird the cargo ship fight was. But I got owned there…

Canonically, Sephiroth was the cargo ship considering he came out of the floor and all.

Square's biggest problem in recent decades (jesus christ) is that they have a stupid desire to try to explain everything as if they're writing episodes of Star Trek. I don't need to know why Jenova looks like a uterus and you don't need to try to create lore to justify why the timeline is now different and don't worry about turning off a bunch of overhead lamps to open a stupid door. It just makes everything worse and raises even more questions.

Could you imagine if these people decided to remake Final Fantasy VIII and attempted to create "logical" excuses for the existence of even half the shit in that game? Picture Japanese people writing up reasons why the Lunatic Pandora exists or how the world's dumb timeline came to be or why I need to junction myself to my Girl Friend to shoot cures out of my dick.

Is FFX good? It and X2 are on sale right now on Steam. I nearly bought it this morning but then I remembered I have about 4 other jrpgs that are unplayed and about 3 in varying states of early play. I may get it anyway, but I need a little outside inspiration.
Avoid the fuck out of X-2. It's like a fifteen year old girl played X and wrote a fanfic about it.

FFX-2 is an OK game on its own merits but is decidedly lackluster as a sequel to FFX. SE can't do a decent sequel to save their lives.
Oh come on; it was shit.

Final Fantasy X = Giant monsters are your friends!

Final Fantasy X-2: Magic dresses! Free your inner Barbie doll! I'm surprised they diidn't change the chocobos into brushable ponies.

FFX-2 starts off that way, and it's really in your face with it for a good chunk of the game, but it gets better and becomes much more than that.

Most people would have played either the PC or PS5 version, and you're looking at the Xbox page.

For those, it's basically as expected: A 7/10 game.
