Disaster Teenage boy, 14, dies after plunging from 400ft drop tower ride at Orlando's ICON Park [Video] - Teen was taken to hospital but died from his injuries, Orange County police said.

Archived video of the fall referenced in the article (but not included), fetched from YouTube (likely to be deleted soon). NSFL. Don't watch if you don't want to see someone splatter at the 3:40 timestamp:

A teenager has died after falling from a drop ride at a theme park in Orlando, Florida

The 14-year-old fell from the plunging ride - the world's tallest free-standing drop tower - at ICON park, just after 11pm on Thursday.

The teen, who has not yet been identified, was taken to hospital but succumbed to his injuries, Orange County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.

Terrifying footage captured the horrific accident and the screams of witnesses as the boy fell from the ride, which rotates around a tower as it rises in the air before plunging to the ground at 75 miles per hour.

The ride, the Orlando Free Fall, opened in December 2021, stands at 430ft tall and can accommodate up to 30 people.

The vehicle rotates around a central tower as it rises. After it reaches the top, riders tilt forward and face the ground briefly before free-falling at approximately 75 miles per hour.

It was not immediately clear how the teenager became free from the ride's seat belt or how many people were on the tower at the time.

ICON Park on International Drive has not yet commented on the tragedy. Police have opened an investigation into the incident.

The teen, who has not yet been identified, was taken to hospital but succumbed to his injuries, Orange County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.

It comes less than two years after a park employee died after falling 200 feet from the Orlando StarFlyer attraction.

The 21-year-old employee was performing a safety check about halfway up the 450-foot-tall ride when he plummeted to his death just before 8am on September 14, the Orange County Sheriff's Office stated.

The worker struck a platform below the ride at ICON Park on International Drive in Orlando and went into cardiac arrest, according to first responders who were called to the scene.

The man was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead from his injuries.

The swing ride opened to the public in 2018. According to the description on the attraction's official site, StarFlyer has no age limit and no weight limit, and the minimum height required to go on the ride is just 44 inches.

The ride is made up of 24 double seats that travel up and down and around the giant tower for 3-4 minutes.

At the time of the fall, the worker was about halfway up the 450-foot-high ride, billed at the world's tallest swing ride

There’s a Lockheed Martin Plant next to Icon Park. I once accidentally drove into it since it’s exit on Sand Lake is just before Universal BLVD.

It scared the freaking crap out of me to read those words.

I’ve not been into Icon Park since.

Saw this update was released about an hour ago, figured it would maybe quell some of the debate in here.
Or make it worse, but either way.

ICON Park: Accident Report in Teen's Orlando FreeFall Ride Death Says Seat Was Locked

Article / Archive

The seat of a teen who fell to his death from an amusement park ride in Florida last week was still locked, according to an accident report from the state.

Tyre Sampson, 14, fell Thursday from the FreeFall drop tower that takes riders up 430 feet and then drops at speeds of up to 75 mph, according to ICON Park in Orlando, where the incident happened.

Sampson came out of the seat when the magnets engaged to slow the ride during the descent, according to the report, which was based on ride employee witnesses and was obtained by CNN.

"Harness was still in a down and locked position when the ride stopped," said the report filed by the operator with the Fair Rides division of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

The report named three witnesses, all listed as employees.

There are also questions around whether the teenager may have been too large to be allowed on the ride.

Sampson's father, Yarnell Sampson, raised that question Friday, telling CNN: "My son was 6'5", 340. So, he's a big guy."

The ride's Operations & Maintenance Manual, which has been posted online by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, indicates the maximum passenger weight is 130 kilograms (approximately 287 pounds).

"Be careful when seeing if large guests fit into the seats. Check that they fit within the contours of the seat and the bracket fits properly. If this is not so - Do not let this person ride," the manual states.

It's not clear if Sampson fit the contours of the seat or if the bracket fit properly.

CNN has reached out to the ride operator, Slingshot Group and ICON Park to ask whether Sampson fit properly.

Video circulating on social media, purportedly of the ICON Park incident, shows a person falling from their seat about five seconds into the ride's drop, perhaps about two-thirds of the way down, as the ride slowed as it approached the ground.

The accident is still under investigation, and the FreeFall ride is closed for now.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office is also investigating the death. No criminal charges have been filed but the investigation remained open, the sheriff's office said Friday.

ICON Park on Monday said it has demanded that Slingshot Group suspend another of its rides at the park, the Orlando SlingShot, "until such time as a thorough investigation by the appropriate authorities has been completed and all parties are satisfied that the rides are safe for the public," the park landlord said in a statement.
I think it was locked - but that is because after he came out the deceleration simply forced the top-over harness to "drop back in".

You can clearly see in the video he pops out the bottom which is utterly impossible if the harness was in place. The harness came loose, he pops out, and after he pops out the deceleration simply forces the harness to re-lock as it slams back down into place.

There is no question it was not in the locked position when he came out. Here are the images showing him just after the harness obviously gives way.

I read somewhere about magnetic latching being used on the ride. Magnetic latching is excellent (much like a mag lock security door) but they have limitations on force depending on the magnets power. This is probably why the ride had weight limits as the calculation for the force during deceleration against the harness would be in jeopardy. However, if this is the case and his weight was sufficient to override the latching force of the magnets then this is a huge issue because you'd expect a fairly inexpensive mechanism like this to be over engineered for peak loads.

Data to hand suggests at some point he knew the harness was loose but there was nothing he could do about it and made comments to such effect - thus the problem existed prior to deceleration. Probably.

Why the system would not have a deactivation for the ride when it detects a harness coming undone is truly horrifying and a serious oversight of the system. If there is no such mechanism then that is even more horrifying that everyone could become unlatched and the ride just goes ahead anyways.

I am going to go out on a very far limb here and make a crazy assumption that the system did in fact have a means to ensure the latches were locked and this was the flaw - I suspect that when the system got to the top of the tower that the computer is designed to send a signal to the latches to ensure that they are in place and it reenergized the magnets. The problem with such a system is that is might for a split second reset the latch in order to reenergize, and if there was enough force against it (like 340 pounds) that it might actually cause the latch to open in that fraction of a second, but the system would recognize that it "reenergized the harness to ensure connectivity" but not actually detect a failure to latch.

To be sure, regardless of his weight, this system was designed flawed and it will be revealed that while he was overweight, this ride was going to kill someone someday, or perhaps a lot of people at one time through a serious design flaw.

If you actually look at this picture you can kind of tell what is going on

Look at the way the harness is sitting on the left hand guy in the white shirt. Notice how the bottom o fthe shoulder restraint is down actually touching the top of the seats crotch post. Now look over at Kong on the right. See how there's gotta be almost 12 inches between the bottom of the shoulder restraint and the top of the seats crotch crusher? At this point those shoulder bars cannot move. They can't release or come back. They are fixed firmly in place by a hydraulic or pneumatic piston. Those bars would remain at that exact locked angle for the entirety of the ride. Short of the ride springing a hydraulics leak. Fat Albert shot out through that gap between the top restraints and the seat. Just before the ride drops it pitches the seats forward 30 degrees. So his hips and pelvis were point straight down over that open air. When the ride hit the breaks, physics and gravity did their thing and he slid down off the seat like a girls dress on prom night.

And a bit of a mystery for the better Internet Autists to sniff out. The ownership and operations of the ride in question is a bit strange.
- Funtime is the Ride's Manufacturer
- Funtime is an investor, a stakeholder or the owner of the Slingshot Group which operates attractions in Florida (not parks just attractions) The exact relationship between Funtime and Slingshot Group remains unclear.
- Slingshot Group operates 3 of the 12 rides in ICON Park Orlando, including this one
- ICON does not appear to hold any ownership of Slingshot Group and Slingshot does not have any ownership of ICON
-There are no ownership ties etc between Funtime and ICON
- It is unclear who actually owns the ride? ICON or Slingshot Group
- This is the second death on a Slingshot operated ride at ICON Orlando. A maintenance worker died from a fall from the Star Flyer last year. (here's the Star Flyer. If you thought the 400' drop tower was insanely stupid)

Slingshot Group attractions:
-Daytona Beach Slingshot and Vomatron
-Old Town Slingshot and Vomatron (Slingshot Kissimmee)
-Orlando Slingshot at Magical Midway
-Go-Karts, Merry Go Round, Bumper Boats, Bumper Cars, and Starflyer at Magical Midway
-Sunset Walk Slingshot
-Slingshot, Vomatron, and Go-Karts at Indy Speedway in Panama City
-Icon Park Orlando Starflyer, drop tower, and slingshot

for the curious, this is the Vomatron

I can't see what could possibly go wrong with any of these well thought out rides?

Slingshots, even ones at major chains like Six Flags, are often operated by a different group (and are an upcharge attraction) because of the training involving the bungie cords. Icon Park was originally developed as a giant ferris wheel with a shopping center. It only later rebranded into a park and has, according to wikipedia, five attractions. Of which three are the Funtime rides and a fourth, the wheel, is also operated by a different company. As such, I would expect that Slingshot group owns the rides but Icon owns the land (these attractions can be disassembled and moved if/when a contract runs out.)

That makes sense. I saw somewhere that ICON Orlando indicated 10-12 attractions. And assumed they meant rides. So 5 rides, the rest is probably dining and shit.

PL: On the other side of the country, but have experience with visiting Lockheed. There used to be a bus station very near there. Used to be. 9/11 screwed up a lot of good stuff. Thanks, Osama.

You used to be able to just walk/drive on in to Lockheed, and nobody batted an eye. Then 9/11 happened. Shit sucks but the world keeps spinning.

Oh yeah, the black kid. Honestly, looking back on this, this is a real wake-up call to not only carnies, but fatties.
Carnies for a need to cinch your customers in securely before you start jostling them

I hadn't seen that camera angle before - if there is no alarm to let them know the harnesses are not engaged I find that fucking insane.

I've done the slingshot - won't be doing it again anytime in the next 3-4 lifetimes.

It would be nice for once for a family yo refuse settlement and allow one of these cases to run its course in a court of law so the dirty details are laid bare on how this happens.

Couldn't his death be prevented if he held unto the handle bars?

At that force, no way. Even with a vice grip the force would break his fingers before allowing himself to stay on. Handle bars on a wooden roller coaster VS a badly designed new mega monstrosity serve very different purposes. Namely, that they don’t do shit for a 400 foot drop ride and a freakishly large preteen.

Couldn't his death be prevented if he held unto the handle bars?
The gap between seat and safety bar was too wide and he squirted out of the ride like the last part of the ketchup out of the bottle. His weight started with a 3. He may have been a big hulking football player but mass times acceleration and all that.

He'd have two broken arms on the way down. That's pretty much a death sentence when you're hurtling toward concrete at speed.

The 2020 death was because the employee was climbing up the ride itself to do a safety inspection, so at least it wasn’t actually running. If you look into Funtime’s history it seems like none of their other rides have had incidents like this. It’s either they cheaped out on manufacturing these two rides specifically or operator error.
Slingshot group owns the ride and seems to have contracted with Funtime specifically to operate their rides/attractions at amusement parks. Slingshot likely contracted with ICON to operate their rides at ICON park in exchange for whatever benefit.
It’s an absolute clusterfuck.
Interesting to note that Slingshot Group only operates in Florida, whereas Funtime operates globally.
Either way all three of em are gonna have to deal with the resulting lawsuit.
Edit: Ah fuck, I’m late.

That's the thing. The harness IS engaged and solid. It's just it has an analog range instead of defined click stops. As far as the ride is concerned it thinks the harness is acceptably down. Because there is no actual connection between the shoulder bars and seat. Most of those type rides have a crotch strap. Or the shoulder rig engages a lock on the seat. This doesn't. Each seat has a red and green light to tell operators if the bars are engaged. And the ride won't function if any are red.
