President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

Obviously. As I said, Russia is seen as an ally, big brother and even potential saviour among some more special people in regards to the whole situation in the Balkans. Putin having such a high approval rate over there doesn't seem that illogical under these circumstances.

Whether the others' antipathy is warranted or not is for them to decide. The fact of the matter is that once the military and police evacuated Kosovo, there was no one left to protect the Serbs and other minorities from marauding Shiptar gangs. Some KFOR contingents (among them Russian, Ukrainian, Greek etc.) did save them. It's a long story I wrote a long 'tism post on that matter somewhere else.

Yes and no, but more towards no. While it was certainly one of the reasons the kingdom failed, Serbs weren't really much of a ruling caste during the communist days factually speaking. Much of the "Serb" ruling cadre were people who unironically fell for the Yugoslav ethnic meme and suddenly discovered their "Serb identiy" when the war broke out or remained unironic communists until the very end like Sloba.

I'm afraid I'm not too familiar with the concept of the Triune Russian Nation to say how much it is applicable to the Serb nation-building during the 19th century.
I can understand Serbs loving Russia. After all, Russia went to war with Austria and Germany over them bullying the Serbs after Archduke Ferdinand's death. That, coupled with the Western intervention against them during the Clinton years, makes them more likely to side with Russia than the West.

Was finished in the times of Russian Empire, when every village got it's own priest. Before that it was a shitshow with a mix of christianity and paganism.
And that was because the Muscovite Church was slow as molasses when it came to reforms. When Patriarch Nikon imposed wide reforms to get rid of influences that he saw as pagan, whole portions of the Church freaked out and ran; that's how you get factions like the Old Believers. And yes, the Old Believers are Russian.

That were cut in the end, so no biggie.
It was only cut when Russia started picking fights with Constantinople over jurisdiction. Which was very recent.

Also, them picking fights with Constantinople is so retarded, Constantinople granted Moscow their patriarchate in 1589. Talk about biting the hand that fed you.

Nigga, please, ukies history is basically neverending backstabbing.
And Russian history isn't?

Yeah, it's not because "ukraine" did a great job with converting people into christianity.

Actually, they started it first.

Well, I don't remember the head of russian uniat church first congratulating the Emperor with the end of WW1, then Hitler with taking over half of Ukraine and then Stalin with taking it back.

Yeah, it's not because "ukraine" did a great job with converting people into christianity.
And Russia did? Again, their church was so backwards and stunted, when a patriarch finally put in reforms to make liturgy more in line with the Greek rites, whole portions of the church ran away.

Also, the Kievan state was the one that laid the foundation for Christianity in that region, in the first place. So again, we have Ukraine to thank for Russian Christianity.

Actually, they started it first.
Er, no. Constantinople has every right to make patriarchates out of any smaller autocephalous church. They gave Moscow its patriarchate in 1589 in the first place. Prior to that, they were just "mission territory" for Constantinople.

Oh, please. Russian politics was one round of backstabbing after another. They went from Tsarist, to Communist, to capitalist, with each phase having its share of bloody betrayals, like Bloody Sunday, Stalin's purges, and now, Russia invading Ukraine despite a previous promise of peace between the two states.

Hell, Russia promised the Ukrainians they would not invade, if the latter gave up their nukes. The Ukrainians gave up their nukes, and look what happened.

As you can see.

I've already told you about that "foundation". If not for Moscow, it would be as good as none.

Nope, they excommunicated then leader of russian church, to which he replied "no, I excommunicated you". Shitshow.

They went from Tsarist, to Communist
Who "they"? Monarchy crumbled by itself and the Emperor was forced to leave the throne by the provisional government. Communist has all the right to use this opportunity, because people were fed up with all of it. Just a little note for you, during the draft for WW1 there were medical exams and more than a half of drafter men had scars from whippings. Geez I wonder why they hated their state so much?

its share of bloody betrayals, like Bloody Sunday
Who betrayed who there? That was a fucking terrible handling of people's unrest, it was incompetence.

Stalin's purges
Well, it's not like those people schemed some shit or something.

and now, Russia invading Ukraine despite a previous promise of peace between the two states.
Oh, so if Russia finds that Ukraine had plans to attack them, then their actions are justified? Because they already did.

Hell, Russia promised the Ukrainians they would not invade, if the latter gave up their nukes. The Ukrainians gave up their nukes, and look what happened.
Ehm, hate to break it to you, but just two weeks before it all started, Zelensky was in Germany and told "we should revise those agreements" even though nobody attacked Ukraine yet. I.e. we want nuclear weapons. Talk shit - get hit.

Everyone neighboring Russia should have just as many nukes as Russia does, aimed at it at all times so it at least has a fucking reason to feel threatened other than feeling like a little bitch because everyone around it is doing just a little bit better in most regards that aren't related to being a nuclear threat to everyone.

And you know what's funny? Had we elected Poroshenko, this fella would've sperged about whatever Poroshenko was doing just the same. Russians have a genocidal hatred for Ukrainians and their existence and no amount of "other" Russians can compensate for that. They literally cannot comprehend why Ukrainians do not wish to be associated with them and constantly denigrate our culture, our history and our everything.

As you can see.
The Old Believers fiasco, being the Czar's slave, and their people turning to Atheist bolshevism. Not to mention that today, they've allowed alcoholism and abortion to run rampant. Which explains why Putin doesn't have the numbers to win his suicidal war; abortion knocks down population levels, and alcoholism lowers testosterone and sperm production for men.

Such a wonderful job.

I've already told you about that "foundation". If not for Moscow, it would be as good as none.
Nope. Even if Moscow didn't exist, the Kievan state brought Christianity to the Russian lands. There would still be Christianity there, perhaps a form of Christianity that isn't so easily keked by a man wearing a crown.

Nope, they excommunicated then leader of russian church, to which he replied "no, I excommunicated you". Shitshow.
Indeed. It's the Russian church biting the hand that fed it because "UKRAINE IS TOTALLY OUR TERRITORY, GUYZ!"

Who "they"? Monarchy crumbled by itself and the Emperor was forced to leave the throne by the provisional government. Communist has all the right to use this opportunity, because people were fed up with all of it. Bloody Sunday, folks. Read about it.

And of course, modern day Russian Orthodoxy is just Putin's puppet. It has no independent voice of its own. Which kind of explains why the Ukrainians wanted to split off from the Russian church, and why the Greeks were so happy to let it happen.

Who betrayed who there? That was a fucking terrible handling of people's unrest, it was incompetence.
Let me put this in simple terms:
"The Tsar has deserted us! They shot away the Orthodox Faith!"

Well, it's not like those people schemed some shit or something.
And exactly why were they scheming?

Lenin didn't want Stalin to succeed him, yet Stalin succeeded him regardless of his wishes.

Oh, so if Russia finds that Ukraine had plans to attack them, then their actions are justified? Because they already did.
Ukraine was of no threat to Russia. Even if they joined NATO, if Russia remained a NATO ally as it did in the 90s, you would still have peace between Russia and the West.

Ehm, hate to break it to you, but just two weeks before it all started, Zelensky was in Germany and told "we should revise those agreements" even though nobody attacked Ukraine yet. I.e. we want nuclear weapons. Talk shit - get hit.
And? Now Russia is losing hard, their economy tanked, their army of gopniks is getting slaughtered by farmers.

Yes, talk shit-get hit. It's just that the Russians keep talking shit to the West, and now they're getting slaughtered by hohols with NATO guns and Turkish drones.

If this is how they fight, then imagine a world without nukes where America and Russia are engaged in conventional war.

It would be over in a fortnight. With American flags flying in the Kremlin.

Oh, muh Rus', we wuz rusiches n shieeeeet. Your half-breed ass has as much to do with it as modern italians has to do with Roman Empire. Well, at least Roman Empire was a real historical formation, unlike Ukraine.
Just remember, God decided to curse the Romans for their sins by making them Italians. I can think of few worse fates than that.

Already copied from this very thread, I believe. We're past the Panzer of the Lake and into the Tankoviy (is that right @Vince McMahon ?) of the Pond.

And now Japan is getting in.

I am going to say that this is just the start of a domino, now that Russia has shown to not be all that strong a lot of countries are going to start claiming Russian lands as their own and probably push more and more until they get as much land as they can take from Russia.

Who do you guys think will be the next country to claim Russia is occupying their lands and they want them back?

And you mean to tell me that this is how a non-seething Russian behaves? If this is an example of a non-seething Russian, you could see why Eastern Europe hates dealing with Russia as a whole.
It's the like Principal Skinner children are wrong meme - They've constantly been told how great and awesome Chukchaland is so it creates this cognitive dissonance , where they are unable to comprehend why their country is a shithole and noone likes them. Rushankans can't be poor and stupid and living in filth because they are evolutinary still stuck in the days of Krepostniki , NO it has to be a grand consipracy against matushka by everyone who isn't poor and stupid and worthless.

It is, Russia's political elite and oligarchs could never be what they are if it wasn't for the corrupt and abusive system that treats it's people like cannon fodder and slaves and it's in their business that it never, ever changes.

They do a fine job of redirecting the feelings of anger and betrayal towards the west though.

This is a bit of a change for Japan as they kept trying until nearly this year to have an early 50s deal between Japan and Soviet Union would given most to Russia, with the closest islands going to Japan. There has to be some connection with how Russia has shown itself to be a paper tiger. Georgia might start looking for S. Ossetia back, which has been talking about joining Russia. They did make some sort of deal with Russia after Saakashvili, but they'd prefer S. Ossetia back. Azerbaijani militia are already needling the Russian peacekeepers in Nagorno-Karabakh. Kazakhstan has a large Russian population in its north, but I don't think Putin will dare do anything now, and they appear not notably supportive. Chinese are already colonising Siberia. Shadowy Russian authority likely won't matter for a while. I wonder will the Central Asian 'stans do something, perhaps shaking off Russian influence, as Russia isn't strong enough to be a patron, but PRC are hardly preferable, and other neighbors are just too weak to be relevant. I don't think the Finns will do anything so third world as to worry about the bits of land lost in the Continuation War, but NATO membership for it and other hitherto neutrals will rile Russia more than claims that normally don't mean anything.
