Part of me wants to believe that the reports of Russian troops getting acute radiation syndrome after digging trenches in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone are just propaganda. Surely the Russian military would only send soldiers with advanced NBC training who knew what they were doing. Like the NBC Protection troops. People who know how to mitigate the risk from radioactive contamination. Plus the zone isn't nearly as dangerous as it used to be and you'd have to really go looking for trouble to actually get ARS. Something stupid like digging in the wrong spot, or hanging around abandoned cleanup equipment for too long. The reports of sickness were either made up, or just something mundane like a virus or food poisoning turning into rumors.
But considering the past 75 years of Russian attitudes towards radiation, it's actually plausible that the Russians dug trenches right into the plutonium laden subsoil, without protective gear, contaminated themselves badly, and now have mild ARS. What a time to be alive.
